Mophie Debuts New Powerstation Wireless XL Portable Battery, Available Today From Apple

Mophie today announced the launch of its latest power bank option, the 10,000mAh Powerstation Wireless XL Universal Battery. The Powerstation Wireless XL comes equipped support for Qi-based wireless charging and it includes a USB-C port for fast charging devices.

The Powerstation Wireless XL, which has a glass top design, can charge an iPhone wirelessly, plus it can be charged wirelessly with a Qi-based wireless charger, so you can wirelessly charge the power bank while you also wirelessly charge your phone.

If faster charging for an ‌iPhone‌ or iPad is needed, the USB-C port can be used, and since it’s an input/output USB-C port, if you want to charge up the power bank quickly, you can do so over USB-C or the included Lightning port.

According to Mophie, the Powerstation Wireless XL adds up to 55 hours of additional battery life to an ‌iPhone‌. Priority+ charging ensures power gets sent to your ‌iPhone‌ first and then the Powerstation when recharging, and an LED power indicator lets you know how much time is left.

The Powerstation Wireless XL can be purchased from the Mophie website or from the online Apple Store for $99.95.

Google’s New True Wireless Pixel Buds Mimic Two Key AirPods Features

Google launched its second-generation Pixel Buds this week to generally favorable reviews, thanks in part to a couple of new features that AirPods owners have appreciated for some time.

The new Pixel Buds use a pairing process on Android 6.0+ phones called Fast Pair: Hold the case near your phone, flip the lid, and a screen pops up on the screen to indicate automatic pairing, which links them to the user’s Google account.

Apart from the obvious UI differences, that’s pretty much identical to the way you connect a pair of AirPods to iPhone. But the similarities don’t stop there. Google is also making it easier to find misplaced Pixel Buds. From Google’s blog:

It can be frustrating when you put your Bluetooth headphones down and immediately forget where you placed them. If they’re connected to your phone, you can locate your headphones by ringing them… And, when you misplace your headphones, in the coming months, you can check their last known location in the Find My Device app if you have Location History turned on.

Sound familiar? Apple’s ‌Find My‌ app includes a Find my AirPods feature that plays a tone to help users recover nearby ‌‌AirPods‌ connected to iPhone or iPad. It also shows the last known location of ‌AirPods‌ if they’re no longer connected.

Credit where it’s due, Google appears to have implemented the features well, including notifying users when the earbuds and case battery are running low upon connection. The company says it plans to include its Fast Pair technology in other audio accessories, just like Apple added its instant-pairing W1 and H1 chips to its wireless Beats line.

The new Pixel Buds are compatible with iOS, but don’t expect the new seamless pairing features to work with ‌iPhone‌ (the same goes for ‌AirPods‌ on Android). Unlike AirPods Pro, Pixel Buds don’t include active noise canceling either, instead offering something called Adaptive Sound that automatically adjusts the volume based on the wearer’s surroundings.

Features like Adaptive Sound and other settings are accessible in the Pixel Buds app on devices running Android 6.0 and later. The Pixel Buds software are also built into the settings menu as a system-level app on Pixel phones. Google’s new Pixel Buds are priced at $179 in the U.S. and can be ordered on the Google Play Store.

Drop XL Wireless Charger Watch Edition Review

With Apple’s AirPower off the table for now, three-in-one charging solutions have become popular, and multiple companies are now introducing multi-device charging options.

Native Union recently released the Apple Watch Edition of its Drop XL Wireless Charger, which is a three-in-one charger able to charge an iPhone, AirPods, and ‌Apple Watch‌ all at once.

At $150, the Drop XL Wireless Charger is one of the pricier options on the market, but it’s also one of more attractive solutions when it comes to design, and it has a unique perk that most other charging stations don’t offer.

The main wireless charging base is oval in shape like many other multi-device wireless charging options on the market, but the variation in the fabric design on top gives it an edge when it comes to design. I like the different directions of the gray textile top, which provides grip, and the dark aluminum base is complementary.

There are two wireless charging spots included in the base, one where the circle design is located and another to the other side of it with the striped fabric design. Because this is a small, flat charger, you do need to charge your ‌iPhone‌ in a portrait mode orientation, which requires a bit more desk space at the top and bottom than an upright charger might need.

I much prefer upright charging options to flat charging options for this reason, and it’s something to keep in mind. You can kind of place the phone a bit diagonally to save some space, but it needs a good inch and half of clearance at the top at bottom to accommodate Apple’s larger phones.

The neat part about the Drop XL Wireless Charger is the detachable ‌Apple Watch‌ charging puck, which plugs into the USB-A port on the back. You can plug it in if it’s needed, or pull it out if you want to travel with the dock or if you need both of the main wireless charging spots free. It’s not an entirely unique feature, but it’s one that few wireless chargers offer.

With the watch add-on plugged in, the available space is only suitable for the ‌AirPods‌ and it doesn’t quite fit a phone, but with the ‌Apple Watch‌ charging puck unplugged, there’s space for multiple smartphones.

Each of the two wireless charging spots offers a maximum of 10W of charging, or 7.5W for the ‌iPhone‌, which is the fastest charging speed available. The ‌Apple Watch‌ charger is a 5W charger, while the USB-A port offers 12W of power. During testing, everything charged as it should.

I will say that with most of the flat chargers on the market, you do need to sometimes make sure the charger is in the correct position to make sure the ‌iPhone‌ is actually charging, and that was a problem that I ran into on the Drop XL. If it’s not positioned right, it’s not going to charge, and that can lead to some nasty surprises if you position the phone in the wrong way.

I also ran into some problems with the ‌iPhone‌ X and XS where the Drop XL said that it was charging but the phone received no power, but this only happened twice in weeks of testing and it was not an issue I saw with the newer iPhone 11 Pro. I suspect this was a self-caused positioning problem, but it’s something to keep an eye out for if you get this charger.

There’s a single charging cable and power adapter for the Drop XL, and it comes with different detachable plugs for different countries, so this is an ideal charger to pick up if you do a lot of traveling. The charging cable is a nice, high-quality braided cable, and it’s clear that no expense was spared when making the Drop XL.

Bottom Line

If you’re more concerned about the look of a wireless charger than the price, the Drop XL Wireless Charger with ‌Apple Watch‌ charging puck is a charger option worth checking out.

It’s elegant and has a design that looks great in an upscale office or home environment, but it is expensive at $150 and it’s not going to be for everyone as there are other more affordable options on the market.

How to Buy

The Drop XL Wireless Charger Watch Edition can be purchased from the Native Union website for $150.

Bloomberg: Apple to Unveil High-End Over-Ear Wireless Headphones With Magnetically Swappable Parts Later This Year

Apple’s long-rumored over-ear wireless headphones are likely to be unveiled later this year, and a new report today from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman offers more details on what we can expect from the product.

According to the report, Apple is working on at least two versions of the headphones, including a “premium version with leather-like fabrics” and a “fitness-focused model that uses lighter, breathable materials with small perforations.”

Prototypes of the headphones have a retro look with oval-shaped ear cups that swivel and a headband connected by thin, metal arms. The arms stem from the top of the ear cups rather than the sides, the people added. They asked not to be identified discussing products that haven’t been announced.

According to Gurman’s sources, the over-ear headphones that Apple is currently developing have ear pads and headband padding that attach to the frame magnetically, allowing users to swap them in and out for customization and replacement. This design may even allow users to easily convert the headphones from comfort to fitness.

Apple is expected to use wireless-pairing and noise cancellation features in the headphones like those found in its AirPods Pro earbuds. Similarly, the new headphones will use Siri for voice control and have a limited set of integrated touch controls, according to the report.

Apple headphones have been rumored for a few years now. Since 2018, rumors have predicted launch dates for the headphones that continuously miss their mark, from launching in late 2018 to sometime in the second half of 2019. However, leaked icons for the headphones were found in a leaked iOS 14 beta last month, suggesting a release sooner rather than later.

The latest murmurs from Gurman’s sources say Apple plans to unveil the headphones later this year, and Twitter leaker John Prosser has claimed Apple is targeting a June WWDC debut, with pricing set at around $350, putting them in the range of Beats Studio3 and Bose 700 headphones.

Apple is reportedly planning to target the high-end audio market with the device, which could explain the ongoing delays in the manufacturing process as the company tries to perfect the design.

The impact of the viral pandemic could also cause problems for Apple. Gurman says China’s Goertek is one of the partners Apple has discussed for handling assembly of the headphones, but the manufacturer has yet to recover fully from the disruption.
