Powerbeats Pro Debut in Four New Colors: Spring Yellow, Cloud Pink, Lava Red, and Glacier Blue

Following a couple of leaks in recent weeks, Beats today is officially announcing four new colors for its Powerbeats Pro wireless earphones: Spring Yellow, Cloud Pink, Lava Red, and Glacier Blue. The new earphones will go on sale June 9 and sell for the same $249.95 price as the existing color options.

Aside from the colors, the new ‌Powerbeats Pro‌ models are otherwise identical to the original Powerbeats Pro, offering up to nine hours of listening time with the charging case bringing the total listening time to over 24 hours. A five-minute Fast Fuel charging feature gives you up to an hour and a half of playback time.

As with every other recent Beats and AirPods product, the ‌Powerbeats Pro‌ include Apple’s H1 chip for easy pairing, seamless switching between devices via iCloud, and “Hey Siri” functionality.

Designed with a sports focus, ‌Powerbeats Pro‌ offer IPX4 sweat and water resistance, so you can use them in the gym without worry. You should avoid submerging them in water, although the original models stood up to splashes, brief submersion, and even more extended dunking in our testing.

‌Powerbeats Pro‌ include on-ear volume and track controls on each earbud, and adjustable earhooks help secure the earphones during vigorous workouts. Four sizes of eartips are included to maximize comfort and provide a good seal in the ear, although the earphones don’t offer any active noise cancellation.

The ‌Powerbeats Pro‌ charging case is considerably larger than the case for the ‌AirPods‌ or AirPods Pro, primarily due to the larger design of the earphones themselves. The case also charges solely through a Lightning port and does not charge wirelessly, though a Lightning to USB-A cable is included.

Sonnet’s Fusion Flex J3i Mount Lets You Add Up to Three Internal Drives to Your Mac Pro

Sonnet today announced the upcoming launch of its Fusion Flex J3i internal drive mount for the 2019 Mac Pro, which lets users add up to three SATA storage drives to their machines.

Sonnet isn’t the only company to launch an internal drive mount for the new ‌Mac Pro‌, and Apple itself sells Promise’s Pegasus J2i system that lets you add two drives, but Sonnet says it’s the first to let users add three drives right inside the ‌Mac Pro‌ and connected directly via SATA.

The Fusion Flex J3i offers two slots that can accept either 3.5-inch hard disk drives or 2.5-inch SSDs, and a third slot that accepts a 2.5-inch SSD, allowing for a total of 36TB of additional internal storage.

Storage installed via the Fusion Flex J3i won’t be as fast as the main NVMe SSDs at the heart of the ‌Mac Pro‌ or PCIe-based storage upgrades, especially if you’re using traditional hard disk drives, but if you’re a user who wants to prioritize storage space and simplicity over drive speed, Sonnet’s Fusion Flex J3i might be worth checking out.

The Fusion Flex J3i includes the mount, required power/data cable assemblies, and mounting brackets to fit 2.5-inch drives into the 3.5-inch drive slots, but the drives themselves are sold separately. It will be priced at $199.99 and launches on June 15.

Apple’s Pro Display XDR Wins ‘Displays of the Year’ Award

The Society for Information Display today announced its selections for the 26th Annual Display Industry Awards, and Apple has once again taken one of the top spots, this time with its Pro Display XDR that debuted last year alongside the revamped Mac Pro.

The Pro Display XDR was one of three display products named “Displays of the Year,” alongside Samsung’s foldable display and BOE’s dual-cell LCD panel that offers improved contrast ratio, minimum brightness, and color depth compared to traditional LCDs.

Pro Display XDR from Apple
With its massive 32-inch LCD panel, 6K Retina resolution, and over 20 million pixels, Apple Pro Display XDR sets a new bar for the capabilities of a professional display. Designed for pro users who rely on color accuracy and true-to-life image reproduction, such as photographers, video editors, 3D animators and colorists, Pro Display XDR delivers the most comprehensive set of features ever offered on a display in its price range, paving the way for pros in every role across a workflow to unlock their creativity. Featuring P3 wide color and 10-bit color depth, Pro Display XDR is expertly calibrated at the factory to ensure billions of colors can be reproduced with exceptional accuracy. And features such as built-in reference modes make it easy to match the viewing requirements of content creation workflows. With 1000 nits of full-screen sustained brightness and 1600 nits peak, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and an Apple-designed backlight system for optimized light shaping, Pro Display XDR sets a new industry standard for incredible reference-quality imaging at a fraction of the size, weight, and cost of traditional reference monitors.

While Apple has positioned the $5000+ Pro Display XDR as competing against reference monitors which can cost several times that amount, some professionals have argued it falls short of that standard. The Pro Display XDR does, however, perform well for its price point, with strong color accuracy, gamut coverage, and sustained brightness.

Apple has become a regular honoree at the Society for Information Display’s awards, most recently winning Displays of the Year awards for the Apple Watch Series 4 last year and the iPad Pro and iPhone X two years ago.

16-Inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iMac Pro With Mini-LED Displays Again Rumored to Launch in 2021

Apple plans to release several higher-end devices with Mini-LED displays in 2021, including a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro in the first quarter, a new 16-inch MacBook Pro in the second quarter, and a new 27-inch iMac in the second half of the year, according to Jeff Pu, an analyst at Chinese research firm GF Securities.

This timeframe lines up with one shared by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who recently said that Apple suppliers are slated to begin mass production of related components between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, suggesting that the majority if not all of the Mini-LED devices will be released next year.

A few months ago, Kuo said that Apple plans to release six Mini-LED products by the end of 2021, including 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, a 27-inch iMac Pro, a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, a 10.2-inch iPad, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini. The analyst said these displays will allow for thinner and lighter product designs, while offering many of the same benefits of OLED displays used on the latest iPhones, including improved contrast and dynamic range.

Switching to Mini-LED displays will also allow Apple to distance itself from the Samsung-dominated OLED display market, according to research firm TrendForce, which also expects a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a Mini-LED display to launch in 2021.

Apple is reportedly investing over $300 million in new Taiwanese factory that is expected to produce Mini-LED and Micro-LED displays for future devices.

Adobe Adding Support for Mac Pro’s Afterburner Card to Premiere Pro

Beta builds of Premiere Pro include support for Apple’s Afterburner accelerator card, Adobe told Premiere Pro users earlier this week. Premiere Pro and After Effects were recently updated with native ProRES RAW support.

The Apple Afterburner is a ProRes and ProRes RAW accelerator card that is an optional add-on accessory available in the 2019 Mac Pro. It supports playback of up to 3 streams of 8K Pro-Res RAW or 12 streams of 4K ProRes RAW.

Adobe says that Premiere Pro supports decode acceleration of ProRes 4444 and 422 codecs using the Afterburner card, but ProRES RAW acceleration through the Afterburner card is not supported at this time.

The Metal renderer must be selected for use in the applications (this is already the default setting):
After Effects (Beta): File > Project Settings… > Video Rendering and Effects > select “Mercury GPU Acceleration (Metal)”
Media Encoder (Beta): Preferences > General > Video Rendering > select Renderer: “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Metal) – Recommended”
Premiere Pro (Beta): File General > select Renderer: “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Metal) – Recommended”

Adobe is seeking ‌Mac Pro‌ users with an Afterburner card to test the ProRes 422 or 4444 support to improve the feature.

AirPods Pro Starting to Be Assembled in Vietnam

Apple has been seeking to add geographic diversity to its supply chain for some time now, with a shift of some production of the AirPods lineup to Vietnam being one significant step for the company.

Photo via @alixrezax

Apple reportedly began trialing production of regular ‌AirPods‌ in Vietnam almost a year ago, and it was reported in December that Apple’s ‌AirPods‌ suppliers were looking to line up financing to expand production.

And just two weeks ago, Nikkei reported that mass production of regular ‌AirPods‌ in Vietnam had started in March.

“The mass production of ‌AirPods‌ in Vietnam started as early as in March,” a person familiar with the matter said. “The Vietnamese officials even granted special permits for a key Apple ‌AirPods‌ assembler to help the company bring in engineers to the country for smooth production during lockdowns.” Vietnam began easing some lockdown measures in late April.

At the time, Nikkei said that the production shift did “not yet include” the higher-end AirPods Pro, but it now appears that ‌AirPods Pro‌ production has indeed begun in Vietnam as several MacRumors readers including @alixrezax on Twitter and “rhyzome” in our forums have reported this week receiving their ‌AirPods Pro‌ with “Assembled in Vietnam” shown on the charging cases.

Vietnam has long been a hotbed for Apple’s audio accessory production, with even older models like wired EarPods having been produced in the country, and it looks like there’s no sign of a slowdown. In fact, a report earlier this week claimed that Apple’s over-ear “AirPods Studio” headphones will be partly produced in Vietnam from their debut for the first time, with shipments expected to begin in June or July.

Production of Apple products in Vietnam may also be expanding to the iPhone, as DigiTimes reported yesterday that Apple has asked its ‌iPhone‌ manufacturing partners to expand production in India and Vietnam. Key partner Foxconn already has significant assembly facilities in the country.
