Google Photos Stops Backing Up Social Media Folders By Default

Google Photos has stopped backing up images and videos from folders created by social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and TikTok (via Android Police).

Previously, Google’s photo app would automatically upload all media saved to an iOS device, including any files saved in folders originating from social and messaging apps.

Google says it’s now turning off this aspect of its cloud photo backup service “to save internet resources” as people share more photos and videos amid the ongoing global health crisis.

Users can reverse this change and re-enable backup of photos and video from social media and messaging apps by following these instructions.

Other digital services including YouTube and Disney+ adopted similar measures to reduce bandwidth strain caused by the global health crisis several months ago.

iOS 14 Lets You Zoom Further Into Photos

In the Photos app, there’s an option to use pinch gestures to zoom in to photos to see details up close, and in iOS 14, Apple lets you zoom in further than ever before.

The image as taken, max zoom on iOS 13, and max zoom on ‌iOS 14‌

Zooming super far into iPhone photos doesn’t always produce the clearest image, but it lets you inspect images more closely.

There have been tricks to zoom in further on images in the ‌Photos‌ app like using the rotate tool to unlock a zoom level not normally allowed, but in ‌iOS 14‌, there’s no need to use any trick to zoom in further.

For those who like to pixel peep at ‌iPhone‌ photos to see different elements of images, the new zooming options will be a welcome and convenient change. There’s still a limit on zooming, so the rotate trick still works if you need to zoom in even further than ‌iOS 14‌ allows. Further zoom will be entirely pixellated though, so most people shouldn’t need to zoom in beyond what’s permitted by default.

‌iOS 14‌ introduces some other changes for the ‌Photos‌ app, such as support for captions for the first time. A complete list of everything new in the ‌Photos‌ app can be found in our iOS 14 roundup, which also covers all of the other new features added in the update.

iOS 14 Lets You Add Captions to Photos

Apple’s iOS 14 update adds several new features to the Photos app, including an option to add captions to images right from the iPhone, which is something that ‌Photos‌ users have been wanting for quite some time.

The ‌Photos‌ app for Mac previously supported captions through the Description field, but on the ‌iPhone‌, there has been no method for adding similar information. In ‌iOS 14‌, entering a caption is quick and easy.

Tap to view any photo full screen on the ‌iPhone‌, and then swipe up to get to the caption field. Tap the field, type the caption, and press enter.

Captions in ‌iOS 14‌ sync across all devices if iCloud Photo Library is enabled, and the Description field in macOS Big Sur has been renamed to Captions for continuity.

Adding a caption to a photo using ‌iOS 14‌ allows for an additional level of tagging and organization because captions can be searched for using the ‌Photos‌ search interface. There’s still no native option for editing metadata for photos, but Captions make it easier to add labels that are visible cross device.

There are a few other useful improvements to the ‌Photos‌ app, such as filters for viewing all images or albums by Favorites, Edited, ‌Photos‌, and Videos, sorting inside albums, and better autoplay for Live Photos. Navigating through photos also lets you zoom in and out on all albums, much like you can do with the “All ‌Photos‌” interface in iOS 13, so it’s easier to find specific images that you’re looking for.

iOS 14 Privacy: Users Can Give Apps Access to Limited Selection of Photos

A new privacy feature in iOS 14 enables users to give an app access to a limited number of photos, instead of having to hand over the keys to their entire photo library.

The new app permissions feature was spotted in the ‌iOS 14‌ beta by Benedict Evans, who shared a couple of screenshots of it in action.

When an app requests access to photos on a device, the user can now choose from three options: Select Photos…, Allow Access to All ‌Photos‌, or Don’t Allow.

An iOS privacy awareness pane explains it like so:

Your photos and memories are personal. Apple’s new privacy controls let you decide what photos and videos you share. When an app asks for permission to access your photo library, you have the choice to select specific items or allow access to all photos and videos.

The change is a nice improvement to the current binary option of either denying an app access to your photos or allowing it to get at your entire library of images. It should come in especially handy for when users want to give an app one-off access to a single photo, for example.

Apple has been keen to promote the new privacy features coming in ‌iOS 14‌. Other ‌iOS 14‌ privacy highlights covered at WWDC 2020 include the ability to give an app your approximate location instead of your precise location, App Store privacy lists for all apps, clipboard restrictions, and camera and microphone access attempt notifications.

Swift Student Challenge Winners Share Photos of WWDC20 Jacket and Pins

Apple yesterday announced 350 winners for its Swift Student Challenge, the prize for which is an exclusive WWDC20 jacket and pin set. Today, some of those winners have begun sharing a look at the jacket and pins on social media (via 9to5Mac).

These students were tasked with creating an interactive scene in a Swift playground, which could be experienced within three minutes. Winners of this challenge now own a jacket that imitates a plaid design created with emoji, as well as pins of various emoji and Apple iconography.

In previous years, the winners would also have received free admission and accommodations for WWDC in San Jose. Because the event is being held virtually this year, these winners will also gain access to one-on-one developer labs with Apple engineers next week.

More Photos and Video of Apple’s Redesigned Leather Loop Watch Band Surface

Images of a new version of the Leather Loop that Apple appears to have in development surfaced yesterday, and today, Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn has shared additional photos and videos that give us a clearer picture of what to expect from the new band.

The bands come in colors that include red, hot pink, blue, black, and brown, with some of the bands featuring different colored accents at the side. The design features more distinct ridging that does not extend to the edge of the band, and it features the same cowhide logo and “Natural Leather” wording that’s on the original Leather Loop.

While the current version of the Leather Loop fastens with a loop-style closure similar to the Sport Loop, the new model attaches to the wrist magnetically. Tinhte.vn‘s bands are all 44mm, but the images shared yesterday suggest there may also be a 40mm version in the works. The current Leather Loop is limited to the larger watches.

The bands appear to feature waterproofing properties that make them suitable for a wider range of activities than the current Leather Loop bands, and they also have a sportier, more casual look to them.

There is a possibility that Apple will sell these bands alongside the existing Leather Loop options as a new band type, but given the similarities between the designs, the new bands could also be a full replacement for the current Leather Loop.

There’s no word on when these new bands might launch, but given that they appear to be finished, we could perhaps see them as early as WWDC. Apple often refreshes Apple Watch band colors alongside major events, so it would not be unusual to see a summer release of a new band option.

Alternatively, Apple could save these new bands for release alongside the ‌Apple Watch‌ Series 6 models in the fall.

Prototype Third-Gen iPod Touch With Rear Camera Shown Off in New Photos

Prior to when Apple released the third-generation iPod touch in September of 2009, it explored a prototype version that had a centered rear camera, a feature the ‌iPod touch‌ ultimately did not launch with.

Giulio Zompetti, a developer who collects Apple device prototypes, today shared some photos of the third-generation ‌iPod touch‌ with rear camera, giving us a clear look at the design variation that Apple tested.

Back in August 2009, prior to when the third-generation ‌iPod touch‌ launched, MacRumors received photos of the prototype model with camera, sparking rumors that the upcoming device could launch with a camera.

At the time, it was believed that Apple scrapped the camera from the ‌iPod touch‌ late in the design process. Final versions of the ‌iPod touch‌ had an empty space where a camera might have been positioned.

After leaking in 2009, a prototype version of the third-gen ‌iPod touch‌ was spotted in a video in May 2010, and ahead of that, in April 2020, a couple of prototype models with camera showed up on eBay.

The eBay seller at the time said that he purchased the models at a flea market from someone who had bought them from a live auction in the Bay Area. Prototype devices like the third-generation ‌iPod touch‌ are hotly desired by collectors and surface on auction sites. Zompetti has in the past said that some of his devices are surfaced from device recycling facilities.

While the third-generation ‌iPod touch‌ didn’t end up with a camera, Apple added it in the fourth-generation model along with a microphone. The fourth-generation ‌iPod touch‌ featured a 0.7-megapixel rear camera alongside its 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera.
