Belkin Launches New Special Edition Boost Wireless Chargers

Belkin today added to its lineup of wireless chargers with a range of new special Boost Charge wireless charging options.

The Boost Charge 3-in-1 Wireless Charger Special Edition, priced at $130, allows the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods to be charged at the same time. There’s an upright charger for the ‌iPhone‌, a charging puck for the ‌Apple Watch‌, and then the ‌AirPods‌ charge right behind the ‌Apple Watch‌ in a dedicated charging space.

The design of the special edition charger is similar to the original 3-in-1 Boost Charge, which we reviewed back in June. The special edition version has a different upright charging base and a rectangular shape, plus it comes in black or white. It charges the ‌iPhone‌ at 7.5W and the ‌AirPods‌ at 5W.

Belkin’s Boost Charge Portable Wireless Charger and Stand Special Edition, priced at $80, is a wireless charger with a built-in battery pack that can be used for charging on the go.

The 10,000mAh battery pack attaches to the charging stand and wirelessly charges the ‌iPhone‌ in an upright landscape or portrait position when connected, but it can be detached and used when traveling. The battery pack charges the ‌iPhone‌ wirelessly, and also has an extra USB-A port.

Belkin’s last new product, the $70 Boost Charge Wireless Charging Pad Special Edition, is a standard round wireless charging pad that comes in either black or white. Like Belkin’s other charging options, it chargers your ‌iPhone‌ at 7.5W, the maximum available charging speed.

The Charging Pad is made from chrome and stainless steel with a non-slip charging surface that ensures the ‌iPhone‌ stays in place.

All of Belkin’s new wireless chargers are available today from the Belkin website and will also be available soon from Apple.

Apple Launches New Educational Curricula for Develop in Swift and Everyone Can Code

Apple today announced significant enhancements for its Develop in Swift and Everyone Can Code educational programs, delivering free curricula and a new Develop in Swift online course to help teachers get up to speed for teaching app development in Swift.

“Apple has worked alongside educators for 40 years, and we’re especially proud to see how Develop in Swift and Everyone Can Code have been instrumental in helping teachers and students make an impact in their communities,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Markets, Apps, and Services. “We’ve seen community college students build food security apps for their campus and watched middle school educators host virtual coding clubs over summer break. As part of our commitment to help expand access to computer science education, we are thrilled to be adding a new professional learning course to help more educators, regardless of their experience, have the opportunity to learn coding and teach the next generation of developers and designers.”

Develop in Swift, which is aimed at students in high school and above, has seen its curriculum completely redesigned and includes four free books available through Apple Books: “Develop in Swift Explorations,” “Develop in Swift AP CS Principles,” “Develop in Swift Fundamentals,” and “Develop in Swift Data Collections,” with the first three available now and the fourth coming this fall.

For younger students and other beginners, Apple is also expanding its Everyone Can Code curriculum, launching a new “Everyone Can Code Adventures” book that builds on previous content in the program to allow for more advanced coding exercises using Swift Playgrounds.

Ireland Launches COVID-19 App That Uses Apple/Google Exposure Notification API

Ireland today released “COVID Tracker Ireland,” a COVID-19 contact tracing app that takes advantage of Apple and Google’s Exposure Notification API.

The app, which is opt in, says that users will be alerted if they come in close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus. Those exposed will be able to track their symptoms, get advice on what to do, and choose to anonymously warn others they’ve been in contact with.

The app downloads a list of anonymous IDs every two hours from those who have contracted coronavirus, letting users in Ireland get alerts as soon as possible. Alerts will be triggered if a user has been within two meters of a person who is diagnosed with COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes, so long as both parties have the COVID app installed.

Alerts will advise people who have been exposed to coronavirus to limit their movements and get tested. The app will not inform users who they came into contact with during the exposure notification nor the place where it happened.

According to the app’s release notes, Ireland is employing a three prong approach to exposure notification, which includes contact tracing for identifying those who have been in close contact with a person that has coronavirus, COVID check-in for those with coronavirus to share their symptoms and how they feel, and updates and information such as the latest facts and figures on coronavirus in Ireland.

As with all apps that use the ‌Exposure Notification‌ API, usage is opt-in and privacy is a focus. Even after opting in, choosing to share a coronavirus diagnosis is also optional. All data collected is stored on the device itself, and name, location, and movements are not tracked.

In a statement to Ireland’s The Journal, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said that the app could be a “really powerful part of the toolkit” for fighting coronavirus.

“It allows every single person to play an extra part. It will allow us to get on with contact tracing in a matter of hours, it will allow people who have the app to completely control their own data, there will be no centralisation of data,” Donnolly said.

“The people themselves can choose if they want to anonymously share with close contacts that they have tested positive. It’s a very, very powerful tool. We’ll be getting into more of the detail tomorrow and we’ll be really encouraging as many people as possible to download and use it.”

Along with Ireland, several other countries have released apps that use Apple and Google’s ‌Exposure Notification‌ API, including Switzerland, Latvia, Italy, Germany, Poland, and Saudi Arabia, while other countries, such as the UK, have apps in the works.

The UK did not originally plan to use Apple and Google’s solution, but in mid-June, the National Health Service said that it would adopt the ‌Exposure Notification‌ API after all.

HYPER Launches ‘HyperJuice’ Compact 100W USB-C GaN Charger

Sanho Corporation’s HYPER brand today is announcing general availability of its HyperJuice USB-C charger, which it bills as the world’s first 100-watt charger that uses gallium nitride (GaN) technology for a more compact design.

The new 100W HyperJuice GaN charger is a four-port charger with two USB-C ports capable of delivering up to 100 watts and two USB-A ports delivering up to 18 watts. The charger’s intelligent power system will balance delivery to multiple devices, up to the maximum total of 100 watts.

The HyperJuice GaN charger raised over $3.3 million between crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and with nearly all of those crowdfunded pre-orders having shipped out, the charger is now available for general sale.

The HyperJuice has about the same footprint as a credit card, although substantially thicker, measuring 85.3 x 60.8 x 28.9 mm and weighing 208 grams. Folding prongs for U.S. outlets are built into the charger, but Type G and Type C adapters are included for compatibility with outlets in other countries such as in Europe.

Apple Launches Website for Paying Apple Card Bills Online

Apple today launched a website that’s designed to allow Apple Card holders to check their balances, view statements, and make ‌Apple Card‌ payments online.

The card.apple.com website lets ‌Apple Card‌ holders sign in with their Apple IDs.

The website features a payments section that shows card balance front and center, along with the next scheduled payment date, and total card limits.

Monthly statements can be viewed and downloaded through another section of the website, while Settings allows users to add a bank account, manage scheduled payments, or see their Mastercard network benefits. A support section of the website provides access to an ‌Apple Card‌ web user guide and a phone number that customers can call to get help.

All of these functions were previously available in the Wallet app, but having online access to ‌Apple Card‌ tools is useful for those who prefer managing their credit cards from their computers rather than their iPhones.

Apple is also now allowing new ‌Apple Card‌ applicants to apply directly from the Apple.com website using any browser when purchasing a product using the ‌Apple Card‌ Monthly Installments option.

As highlighted yesterday, Apple is running a promotion for new ‌Apple Card‌ users at the current time, providing $50 Daily Cash when the ‌Apple Card‌ is first used to pay for an Apple service like an App Store purchase, Apple Arcade, or Apple Music.

Spotify Launches $12.99 Premium Duo Plan for Couples

Following over a year of testing in select countries, Spotify is debuting a new subscription plan called Premium Duo, which costs $12.99 a month and allows two people who live under the same roof to share the one plan while owning separate Spotify accounts.

Duo costs $3 more than a single Premium membership, and given the new plan is aimed at couples and roommates, both users must live at the same address. Spotify requires a confirmation of address during the sign-up process, and the bill for the plan is sent to the person who sets up and purchases the Premium Duo account.

Premium Duo comes with an exclusive playlist called “Duo Mix,” which Spotify regularly updates based on music that each user on the plan listens to and likes.

Duo Mix includes two versions: “Calm” for more mellow tracks and “Upbeat” for songs with a faster tempo. Additionally, the two members on Premium Duo are able to create playlists and share them with each other via a Shared Playlists feature.

Existing solo Premium members can upgrade to Premium Duo at any time without losing their existing account listening history or preferences. It’s worth noting that a Family plan membership is only $2 more than Duo and supports up to six accounts. For more information on Premium Duo, head to the Spotify website.
