iPhone 12 Could Ship With New Braided USB-C to Lightning Cable

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 models could ship with a new Lightning to USB-C cable that includes a braided fabric design, according to leaked photos from ChargerLAB that surfaced on Weibo today (via Twitter users DuanRui and L0vetodream).

The photos depict a USB-C to Lightning cable that has a braided design rather than the standard non-fabric design of the current cables. Apple has never released a cable with a braided design for its iPhones or iPads, but it does offer a braided Thunderbolt Pro cable, a black braided Lightning cable that ships with the Mac Pro, and a braided power cable for the HomePod.

Braided cable designs have the potential to be more durable than standard rubber-coated cables, but typically extra reinforcement is included at the end points where the cable heads are positioned, which isn’t seen here. The cables look similar to existing Apple-designed Lightning to USB-C cables with the exception of the new gray and white braided look.

ChargerLAB, where the leak originated, has shared accurate information on Apple’s cable plans in the past and says that the cable depicted here may come standard with Apple’s ‌iPhone 12‌ lineup. Apple in 2019 included a USB-C to Lightning cable with the higher-end Pro iPhone models to go along with a USB-C power adapter, while the more affordable iPhone 11 came with a standard USB-A to Lightning cable.

ChargerLAB’s testing confirms that the cable appears to feature an original Apple-certified Made for ‌iPhone‌ design, and the cable measures in at 1.05 meters, close to the length of Apple’s current 1-meter cables. When it comes to thickness, the cable measures in at 3.04mm, which is just a bit thicker than Apple’s existing USB-C to Lightning cable.

Use the POWER-Z MF001 MFi tester to read the internal information of the Lightning terminal. From the screen, you can see that the wire ASIC and PMU are original, the terminal model is C94, and the score reaches 100 points. It is an Apple MFi certified original terminal.

Apple’s USB-C to Lightning cables are used to enable fast charging in compatible iPhones, providing a 50 percent charge within 30 minutes. The cable was able to fast charge an ‌iPhone‌ and an iPad according to ChargerLAB.

What is the charging performance of the wire? The editor uses an Apple 96W PD charger to charge the iPhone 11 Pro Max with a power of 8.98V 2.52A 22.68W, which reaches the maximum power of the ‌iPhone 11 Pro Max‌.

In addition to providing fast PD charging for the ‌iPhone‌, the ‌iPad‌ is also okay. The test charging power for the ‌iPad‌ Air3 reached 15.02V 2.17A 32.72W, which reached the maximum power of the ‌iPad‌ Air3.

Along with a braided design, the new cables appear to feature 8 silver contacts with rhodium-plated ruthenium, which is more resistant to corrosion, and combined with the braided design, these cables are likely to be able to better withstand damage after prolonged use. A more durable design will be a welcome change for ‌iPhone‌ users as there have been many complaints over the years about the weak design of Apple’s cables.

Apple’s new braided USB-C to Lightning cable may be the only accessory that ships with its 2020 iPhones. Multiple rumors have suggested the ‌iPhone 12‌ models will not come with a power adapter or EarPods in the box, allowing Apple to save money and cut down on packaging.

Instead, Apple may sell a new 20W power adapter on a standalone basis, allowing customers to purchase a power adapter separately from Apple or from a third-party manufacturer.

Possible ‘iPhone 12’ Battery Certifications Suggest Lower Capacities Than iPhone 11 Series

MySmartPrice has spotted certifications for three new Apple batteries that it believes could be for the upcoming iPhone 12 lineup, despite them being less capacitive than the batteries in the current iPhone 11 series.

The batteries are identified with the model numbers A2471, A2431, and A2466, and appear on Safety Korea, China’s 3C, and the Danish agency UL Demko.

Apple is expected to release four iPhones this fall, including one 5.4-inch model, two 6.1-inch models, and one 6.7-inch model. MySmartPrice has interpreted the different capacities as belonging to the following ‌iPhone 12‌ models (assuming the higher end ‌iPhone 12‌ Max and ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro share the same battery):

  • Apple ‌iPhone 12‌ (5.4-inch) – A2471 – 2,227mAh
  • Apple ‌iPhone 12‌ Max (6.1-inch) – A2431 – 2,775mAh
  • Apple ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro (6.1-inch) – A2431 – 2,775mAh
  • Apple ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro Max (6.7-inch) – A2466 – 3,687mAh

Apple improved the capacity of its batteries in the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, which have both heavier and thicker batteries than those used in the previous XS and XS Max models. The ‌iPhone 11 Pro‌ has a 3,046 mAh battery, up from the 2,658 mAh battery in the iPhone XS, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 3,969 mAh battery, up from the 3,174 mAh battery in the ‌iPhone XS‌ Max.

The ‌iPhone 11 Pro Max‌ has the largest battery life of any iPhone ever, lasting up to five hours longer than the ‌iPhone XS‌ Max per charge.

If these batteries are indeed destined for the ‌iPhone 12‌ series, the numbers are likely to disappoint some waiting for Apple’s next smartphone lineup. The capacities are especially discouraging given that Apple suppliers were reportedly developing a custom battery protection module that’s 50 percent smaller and thinner than the same component in previous iPhones.

The rumored ‌iPhone 12‌ series could also have higher battery demands than previous iPhones, meaning Apple would have to make some serious energy efficiency improvements to make them last as long as current-generation models. All four devices are expected to have OLED displays, 5G support, a new ‌iPhone‌ 4-like metal frame, up to 6GB of RAM, up to triple-lens rear cameras with 3D sensing, and more.

Leaker: ‘iPhone 12 Pro’ to Come With 6GB of RAM

Later this year, Apple is expected to release four OLED iPhones in three display sizes, including 5.4, 6.7, and two 6.1-inch models. Rumors suggest the 6.7-inch iPhone and one 6.1-inch model will be higher-end devices, and now leaker @L0vetodream has corroborated previous rumors about the internal specs of Apple’s upcoming lineup.

Rumors suggest Apple will use 5-nanometer A14 chips in its 2020 ‌iPhone‌ lineup that will be smaller, faster, and more battery efficient due to improved thermal management. And to accommodate these improvements, @L0vetodream claims the Pro models will feature 6GB of RAM, while the mid-level models will retain the same 4GB of RAM that all iPhone 11 models have.

Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis previously said he believes the iPhone 12 Pro models will feature 6GB RAM, while the ‌iPhone 12‌ will have 4GB RAM. UBS analysts also believe the four iPhones in development will feature varying amounts of RAM. They’re expecting a 6.7-inch ‌iPhone‌ with 6GB RAM, a 6.1-inch ‌iPhone‌ with 6GB RAM, a 6.1-inch ‌iPhone‌ with 4GB RAM, and a 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌ with 4GB RAM.

The anonymously-run Twitter account @L0vetodream accurately revealed several details about the new ‌iPhone SE‌ before any other leakers that we know of, including that the device would launch in the second week of April and come in three storage capacities. Likewise, the account accurately claimed that new iPad Pro models would launch in the third week of March. It has also hinted at a 2021 release for a rumored 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Analyst Believes iPhone 12 Pricing Will Start $50 Higher Even Without EarPods or Charger in Box

Despite multiple reports indicating that Apple will not include EarPods or a wall charger with iPhone 12 models this year, one analyst believes that pricing will still increase slightly compared to the iPhone 11 lineup.

In a research note provided to MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pu forecasted that iPhone 12 pricing will start at $749 for a new 5.4-inch model, an increase of $50 over the base model ‌iPhone 11‌ for $699. Pu said the price is primarily attributed to the addition of 5G and an OLED display on all ‌iPhone 12‌ models, whereas the base ‌iPhone 11‌ has an LCD.

Due to 5G, Pu believes that the price increase will be “accepted by consumers” and “will not affect demand,” but the move would generate controversy nonetheless if the EarPods and wall charger are removed from the box as rumored.

Extrapolating on Pu’s prediction, the 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 12‌ would likely start at $799 or $849, so customers who want to stick with the same size display as the ‌iPhone 11‌ could be facing a larger $100 to $150 price increase. It’s unclear if a price increase would extend to the Pro and Pro Max models, which currently start at $999 and $1,099, respectively.

This prediction contradicts information shared by Jon Prosser, who said the iPhone 12 lineup will start at $649.

iPhone 12 Sizes Compared with iPhone SE, 7, 8, SE 2, X, 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max

Apple is planning on launching the iPhone 12 this fall which is rumored to be coming in 3 different sizes: 5.4″, 6.1″ and 6.7″. The middle size (6.1″) matches up with the currently shipping iPhone 11, but the other two sizes will be entirely new.

Over the weekend, there was some excitement about how well the new 5.4″ ‌iPhone 12‌ compares to the original iPhone SE. Those who have been hoping for a smaller iPhone see the 5.4″ model as possible successor to the original ‌iPhone SE‌ in terms of one handed use.

Claimed iPhone 12 Box Insert Design Suggests No Included EarPods or Power Adapter

Starting with the iPhone 12 later this year, Apple has been rumored to be omitting the EarPods and power adapter that have traditionally been included in the box, an effort that would save Apple money, reduce e-waste, and cut down on packaging size as Apple would rely on most users already having their own earphones and a plethora of power adapters.

Ran Avni of popular iPhone 3D concept channel ConceptsiPhone has shared a new rendering from a “really reliable source” that is claimed to be a box insert for the ‌iPhone 12‌.

The insert exhibits a very thin profile with a circular area that would be for a USB-C to Lightning cable and a square area that could be for paperwork and the traditional stickers that come with Apple products, as it looks too thin to house EarPods. A thin depression around the entire insert is likely where the ‌iPhone‌ itself would sit.

Apple typically makes nearly its entire product packaging out of recycled paper products, with the ‌iPhone‌ box inserts firmly glued into the outer retail boxes. The rendering of this insert looks more like plastic, which would be unusual in a modern Apple retail box, but it could simply be due to the rendering process not accurately representing the molded paper products.

We’re a little skeptical of the veracity of this for now, but if true, it would be a strong piece of evidence that Apple is indeed planning to not include EarPods or a power adapter with the ‌iPhone 12‌ and demonstrates how much thinner the overall ‌iPhone‌ box could be without those items included.

iPhone 12 Dummy Models Depict Design and Size Options

Ahead of the launch of new iPhones we often see dummy models created based on leaked schematics and specifications, with those models designed to let case makers create cases for the new devices ahead of their release. We got our hands on a set of dummy models that represent the iPhone 12 lineup, giving us our first close look at the iPhone 4-style design and the different size options.

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.

Dummy models like these often turn out to be accurate, and given that these line up with the glut of rumors that we’ve had about the 2020 iPhones so far, the dummies are likely to represent what we can expect to see this fall in terms of size and overall body design.

Apple is rumored to be releasing four iPhones in 2020: a 5.4-inch ‌iPhone 12‌, a 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 12‌, a 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro, and a 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro Max. The two “Pro” devices in 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes will be higher-end, more expensive devices, while the 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌ and other 6.1-inch ‌iPhone‌ will be more affordable similar to the iPhone 11.

All of the 2020 iPhones are expected to feature a new design that more closely resembles the ‌iPhone‌ 4 or the iPad Pro with a square-edged frame and a front and back glass body, which can be seen in the dummy models. It’s a clean, sturdy design that will be a welcome departure from the rounded corners we’ve had for iPhones since the launch of the ‌iPhone‌ 6.

‌iPhone 12‌ dummy on left, 2020 iPhone SE on right

The 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌ will be the smallest ‌iPhone‌ that Apple has released since the original ‌iPhone SE‌. It’s bigger than the original ‌iPhone SE‌, but with its all-display design, it’s smaller than the 4.7-inch 2020 ‌iPhone SE‌ and of course much smaller than the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro.

Original ‌iPhone SE‌ on left, ‌iPhone 12‌ dummy in middle, 2020 ‌iPhone SE‌ on right

Though smaller than the 4.7-inch ‌iPhone‌, it has a larger display because Apple is doing away with the bezels and the Touch ID Home button. All iPhones in 2020 will have full-screen OLED displays with Face ID and minimal bezels.

The 6.1-inch dummy model is larger than the 5.8-inch ‌iPhone 11 Pro‌, as is expected, and it is similar in size to the ‌iPhone 11‌, which was also a 6.1-inch device. Size wise, it’s not too far off from existing iPhones, but the feel of the phone in the hand is different because of those flat edges.

The 6.7-inch model is the largest ‌iPhone‌ that Apple has ever released, and it’s noticeably bigger than the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max. For those who prefer larger displays, the 6.7-inch ‌iPhone‌ will be appealing.

‌iPhone 11 Pro Max‌ and ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro Max dummy

Apple’s two lower-end ‌iPhone‌ models (5.4 and 6.1-inch) are expected to have dual-lens camera setups, while the higher-end models will have triple-lens cameras. There are also rumors that the Pro models could feature the same LiDAR Scanner introduced in the ‌iPad Pro‌.

That LiDAR Scanner is not pictured in these dummy models, and that’s because these are designed for case makers. Case makers care about the size of the rear camera bump, but what’s in that bump doesn’t matter to them.

‌iPhone 12‌ dummies next to ‌iPad Pro‌ camera setup

For that reason, these camera setups are not likely to accurately represent the actual camera modules added in the 2020 iPhones. The same goes for the front-facing camera setup. There have been rumors that the notch will be smaller and that the notch is the same size on these dummies is not necessarily an indication that those rumors are untrue.

There’s one other major design change worth noting. There’s a new cutout area underneath the power button on some of the dummy models, which is believed to be necessary for the 5G antenna on the devices. All of the 2020 iPhones are expected to support 5G speeds.

5.4-Inch iPhone 12 Model Size Compared to Original iPhone SE and iPhone 7

iPhone 12 dummy models based on leaked schematics have been starting to circulate online and in online marketplaces.

Not happy with the circulating size comparisons between the rumored 5.4″ iPhone 12 and the original iPhone SE models, MacRumors forum user iZac took matters into his own hands and purchased his own 5.4″ dummy model to provide more detailed size comparisons between the original iPhone SE and iPhone 7 and the rumored 5.4″ iPhone 12.

Original iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 12
iPhone SE, 5.4″ iPhone 12 model, iPhone 7

iZac and others in the thread are looking towards the 5.4″ iPhone 12 as potentially replacing their original iPhone SE (4-inch screen) as a one-handed device. Overall, he feels that he can get used to the small size difference with the upcoming device:

From handling it I can say it does feel like a bit more of a stretch than the SE, which just nestles very comfortably in my hand. BUT, although it’s nearer to the 7, I will note that it feels a lot more manageable because the square profile and flat side lets you actually grip the device.

iZac found that the rumored 5.4″ iPhone is about 6mm wider than the currently shipping iPhone SE and about 3mm narrower than the iPhone 7:

Quick takeaway is it’s ~6mm wider than the iPhone SE and ~3mm thinner than the iPhone 7 that I’ve scaled it against. This lines up with the CAD drawings I previously drew based on the leaked resolution, which I calculated as 2.8mm thinner than the iPhone 7. The round profile on the 7 makes it appear thinner in images. it‘s also stacked on the bottom so doesn’t help with perspective. I used the portrait camera to try to reduce that factor.

iZac also approximates the upcoming 5.4″ iPhone 12 to be approximately 1mm thicker than the SE.

The iPhone 12 is rumored to be released this fall in three different sizes. Rumors indicate we’ll see a 5.4-inch iPhone, a 6.7-inch iPhone, and two 6.1-inch iPhones. 5.4 inches is smaller than the current iPhone 11 Pro (5.8 inches), while 6.7 inches is bigger than the current iPhone 11 Pro Max (6.5 inches).

iZac posted some additional photos and comments in the original forum thread.

Kuo: ‘iPhone 12’ to Feature ‘High-End’ Camera Lens Supplied by Largan

Apple’s upcoming “iPhone 12” will feature “high-end” lens arrays in the rear camera to improve image quality, according to respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a new research note seen by MacRumors, Kuo says Largan will supply the premium camera lenses to Apple for the phones, although Apple has received the same components slightly earlier in the last couple of years.

Production has reportedly been delayed by four to six weeks in the second half of this year, which will see peak iPhone shipments fall between August and October.

Kuo doesn’t mention the reason for the delay in his note, but the global health crisis is very likely to have had an impact. Apple is still expected to announce the iPhones in September, but rumors have claimed that some ‌iPhone‌ models might not launch until October or November.

Kuo’s latest note doesn’t specify what kind of “high end” lens will be used in the ‌iPhone 12‌, but in a previous note he claimed that the 6.7-inch ‌iPhone‌ model will feature multiple rear camera improvements, including larger sensors that capture more light for better image quality.

Apple is expected to launch high-end 6.7 and 6.1-inch iPhones with triple-lens cameras, and lower-end 5.4 and 6.1-inch iPhones with dual-lens cameras. Kuo still expects the 6.1 and 5.4-inch iPhones to go into mass production in September, while mass production on the larger 6.7-inch ‌‌iPhone‌‌ will be delayed until October because of its more complicated design.

Display Analyst Once Again Says No 120Hz ProMotion Display Coming to iPhone 12 Pro

Apple’s iPhone 12 models will not feature an upgraded 120Hz ProMotion display, according to display analyst Ross Young. Young previously said that Apple would not implement ProMotion technology until it adopted low-power LTPO display technology, a move Apple is not expected to make until 2021.

In a tweet shared this morning, Young said that the none of his contacts have been able to corroborate rumors that the ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro models will feature 120Hz displays, with his sources instead indicating 120Hz technology will be coming in the 2021 iPhone refresh.

There’s been a lot of back and forth on the ProMotion display rumors, with some leakers suggesting 120Hz support is in the works. These rumors kicked off in 2019 when leaker “Ice Universe” said that Apple was considering a switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate for at least one ‌iPhone‌ in 2020.

Taiwanese site DigiTimes has also said that Apple is planning to release an ‌iPhone‌ with a 120Hz display, as have leakers Max Weinbach and Jon Prosser.

Young, who has display expertise, has maintained that Apple will implement ProMotion in 2021 alongside the adoption of low-power LTPO displays which will allow for a variable refresh rate that preserves battery life. Adding a ProMotion display to the ‌iPhone‌ without the technology could result in undesirable battery drain, though it’s worth noting the iPad Pro uses ProMotion without LTPO.

Last week, Ice Universe again claimed that the ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro Max models will offer displays capable of refresh rates up to 120Hz. “A reliable source, if there is no accident, ‌‌iPhone 12‌‌ Pro and ‌‌iPhone 12‌‌ Pro Max have basically determined the maximum 120Hz refresh rate,” he said.

There’s also an accessibility setting in iOS 14 that appears to limit the frame rate of the ‌iPhone‌ to 60 frames per second, which could be indicative that future iPhones will support higher frame rates. The setting does not show up for all beta users, however, and could be a bug.

ProMotion technology on the ‌iPad Pro‌ is able to dynamically adjust the display to the movement of content, resulting in more fluid scrolling, smoother motion, and improved responsiveness. The frame rate changes based on the content on the screen, preserving battery life.

Given the mixed rumors about ProMotion display technology, we may not know for sure if the new iPhones will have the feature until their debut this fall. Current rumors suggest Apple will unveil the new iPhones in September, but a launch for some or all models could be delayed until October or November.
