Israeli Security Company NSO Pretends to Be Facebook – Disposable mail news

As per several reports, Facebook was imitated by an Israeli security company that is known as the “NSO Group” to get the targets to install their “phone-hacking software”.

Per sources, a Facebook-like doppelganger domain was engineered to distribute the NSO’s “Pegasus” hacking contrivance. Allegedly, serves within the boundaries of the USA were employed for the spreading of it.

The Pegasus, as mentioned in reports, if installed once, can have access to text messages, device microphone, and camera as well as other user data on a device along with the GPS location tracking.

NSO has denied this but it still happens to be in a legal standoff with Facebook, which contends that NSO on purpose distributed its software on WhatsApp that led to the exploitation of countless devices. Another allegation on NSO is about having delivered the software to spy on journalist Jamal Khashoggi before his killing, to the government of Saudi Arabia, citing sources.

Facebook also claimed that NSO was also behind the operation of the spyware to which NSO appealed to the court to dismiss the case insisting that sovereign governments are the ones who use the spyware.

Per sources, NSO’s ex-employee, allegedly, furnished details of a sever which was fabricated to spread the spyware by deceiving targets into clicking on links. The server was connected with numerous internet addresses which happened to include the one that pretended to be Facebook’s. And Facebook had to buy it to stop the abuse of it.

As per reports, package tracking links from FedEx and other links for unsubscribing from emails were also employed on other such domains.

NSO still stand their ground about never using the software, themselves. In fact they are pretty proud of their contribution to fighting crime and terrorism, mention sources.

Security researchers say that it’s almost impossible for one of the servers to have helped in the distribution of the software to be within the borders of the USA. Additionally, reports mention, NSO maintains that its products could not be employed to conduct cyber-surveillance within the United States of America.

Facebook still holds that NSO is to blame for cyber-attacks. And NSO maintains that they don’t use their own software.

Brazilian Electronics Company Revives Long-Running iPhone Trademark Dispute

Apple has been involved in a long-running iPhone trademark dispute in Brazil, which was revived today by IGB Electronica, a Brazilian consumer electronics company that originally registered the “‌iPhone‌” name in 2000.

IGB Electronica fought a multi-year battle with Apple in an attempt to get exclusive rights to the “‌iPhone‌” trademark, but ultimately lost, and now the case has been brought to the Supreme Federal Court in Brazil, according to Brazilian site Tecnoblog (via Reddit).

IGB Electronica under the name Gradiente produced a line of IPHONE-branded Android smartphones in Brazil in 2012, and there was a period of time where the Brazilian company was given exclusive rights to the ‌iPhone‌ trademark. That ruling didn’t last, though, and Apple and IGB ultimately both wound up with rights to use the name in the country.

Apple has sought to prevent IGB from using the trademark, while IGB has been attempting to regain its exclusive access to the branding. A decision in 2018 upheld a 2013 ruling that gave both brands permission to use the trademark.

With the most recent lawsuit, IGB is aiming to reverse that 2018 decision, but the case could take years to get a ruling from the Supreme Federal Court in the country. IGB has been in judicial recovery since 2018 and has lost close to 1 billion Brazilian Reals, so the company may be hoping for a payout from Apple to end the dispute.

Apple Acquires Virtual Reality Company NextVR

Apple has acquired California-based virtual reality company NextVR, Apple confirmed to Bloomberg today.

New’s of Apple’s planned NEXTVR acquisition first surfaced in April, but it appears the purchase wasn’t completed until recently. Apple reportedly spent around $100 million to purchase the company.

The NextVR website has disappeared, and there is a message that says the company is “heading in a new direction.” Apple gave Bloomberg its standard acquisition statement: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

NextVR melds virtual reality with sports, music, and entertainment, providing VR experiences for watching live events on VR headsets from PlayStation, HTC, Oculus, Google, Microsoft, and other manufacturers.

Prior to its acquisition by Apple, NextVR had established partnerships with the NBA, Wimbledon, Fox Sports, the WWE and more, plus it holds more than 40 patents that could be of interest to Apple.

Apple has been working on multiple augmented, virtual, and mixed reality headsets over the course of the last several years. Just today, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple’s augmented reality Smart Glasses that are in the works could launch in 2022.

Along with the smart glasses, there have also been rumors indicating Apple is working on some kind of virtual reality headset that would feature an 8K display for each eye and that would be untethered from a smartphone or computer.

Smart Home Company Wink Gives Users an Extra Week Before Surprise Subscription Fees Are Required

Wink, a company that makes a smart home hub that links smart home devices together, last week upset customers with the announcement of a new surprise subscription service that will be required to use the Wink product going forward.

Wink, which was not a subscription service when customers purchased the product, at the time said that it would give customers a one-week grace period before charging a subscription fee. As of today, Wink announced that it has extended that grace period for another week, and customers won’t be charged until May 20. The subscription fees were originally set to kick in on May 13.

Wink customers who do not start paying $4.99 per month on May 20 will not be able to continue using their Wink products. Those who choose not to pay the fee will not be able to access Wink devices from the app, with voice control, or the API, and automations will be disabled.

Current Wink customers have reacted negatively to the new subscription fees, with many complaints on Reddit from customers unhappy with the requirement to pay up or lose access to their smart home interface. From Wink:

Should you choose not to sign up for a subscription you will no longer be able to access your Wink devices from the app, with voice control or through the API, and your automations will be disabled on May 20th. Your device connections, settings and automations can be reactivated if you decide to subscribe at a later date.

Wink says that hardware sales are no longer able to cover the cost of ongoing cloud services, development, and customer support, and to support continued growth, a subscription fee needs to be implemented.

Facial recognition company Clearview AI hit by data theft – 10 minute mail

The startup came under scrutiny after it emerged that it had amassed 3 billion photos for facial recognition software

The controversial facial recognition company Clearview AI has notified its customers that a bad actor had “gained unauthorized access” to its entire client list, which includes some of the most powerful law enforcement agencies in the United States. According to the notification obtained by the Daily Beast, the stolen information included customer names, the user accounts that the customers had set up, and even the number of searches that they ran through the service.

Overall, however, details are sparse about the nature of the incident or how it unfolded.

“Unfortunately, data breaches are part of life in the 21st century. Our servers were never accessed. We patched the flaw, and continue to work to strengthen our security,” Tor Eklund, an attorney representing the company, was quoted as saying.

Interestingly, Clearview AI denied that it had suffered any sort of breach of its own servers. The startup also gave assurances that the bad actors weren’t able to gain access to the search histories of any of the law-enforcement agencies using the system. Apparently, the image database was not accessed, either.

ESET Security Specialist Jake Moore shared his expert opinion on the matter: “Data breaches might be part of life in the 21st century but we need to make sure the severity is kept to a minimum and the data exposed is heavily encrypted. Any data breach is serious and should not be taken lightly. If the data exposed had included faces, it would have taken this to the next level.”

He goes on to emphasize: “Companies which hold extremely sensitive data such as facial identities need to understand they are a higher profile risk and need even more layers of protection to thwart these inevitable attacks.”

Clearview AI has been in the spotlight after the New York Times wrote that the company had scraped over 3 billion images from social media such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. The company received cease-and-desist letters from the affected tech giants, which claimed that Clearview AI had violated their terms of use. The company, which has also been hit with class-action lawsuits by American citizens, seems unruffled by the accusations and argues that it has a First Amendment right to scrape public data.

Facial recognition is a hotly discussed topic, especially due to the underlying privacy concerns and the potential for misuse of the technology. San Francisco, for one, was the first city in the United States to ban its use by law enforcement and local agencies. Meanwhile, the European Union mulled a temporary ban on the use of the technology in public places, but eventually backtracked on the idea.

Hackers Attack IOTA’s Trinity Wallet, Company Shuts Down the Network – Disposable mail news

The hackers attacked the IOTA’s cryptocurrency wallet and stole all the funds. The theft happened by exploiting a vulnerability in the IOTA’s networks.
Attack took place on 12th February 2020, and the company informed about the incident via its official account on twitter. The tweet said that the IOTA is presently investing an attack on its trinity wallet. IOTA has advised its users not to share or use the Trinity Wallet on their desktop until the case has been solved. According to the news, the IOTA is currently working with cybersecurity experts and law agencies to go to the roots of the problem that has caused the cryptocurrency theft.

The company, on its official website, announced that because of the theft of funds, it has shut down its ‘Coordinator’ node for a while to protect the users. The Coordinator works as a final checkpoint for safety assurance of the transactions that take place on IOTA’s network.
According to the company, the decision to shut down the Coordinator node is to protect any further fraudulent transactions that might take place on IOTA’s network. IOTA says that the hackers chose to attack the high profile accounts first, and then moved on to smaller accounts, and so on until the transactions were stopped by the coordinator.

“The attack pattern analysis showed that the halt of the coordinator interrupted the attacker’s attempts to liquidate funds on exchanges,” said the IOTA’s official website. “The stolen funds have been purposely and repeatedly merged and split to obfuscate the investigation, and with the current token exchange rate as well as exchanges’ KYC limits in mind. We received additional feedback from more exchanges (not all yet), confirming that none of the identified transactions has been received or liquidated.”

As of now, IOTA’s network system is still not active, and the company is still investigating the issue.
Cybersecurity experts and members of the IOTA say that the hackers found a vulnerability in the Trinity wallet and were thus able to launch the attack. IOTA hasn’t announced anything about the amount stolen but the experts believe it to be around $1 Million IOTA coins or more.

Apple Becomes the First Major US Company to Say that the ‘Corona’ Epidemic Will Hit Its Finances – Disposable mail news

The iPhone maker cautions that disturbance in China from the coronavirus will result in revenues falling short of forecasts’. Underscoring the fact that production and sales were influenced, Apple says that “worldwide iPhone supply would be temporarily constrained”.

Sales of Apple products would be lower, bearing in mind that most stores in China are either closed or operating at reduced hours, the company says, “while our iPhone manufacturing partner sites are located outside the Hubei province – and while all of these facilities have reopened – they are ramping up more slowly than we had anticipated.”

“All of our stores in China and many of our partner stores have been closed,” it added. “Additionally, stores that are open have been operating at reduced hours and with very low customer traffic. We are gradually reopening our retail stores and will continue to do so as steadily and safely as we can.”

Experts have assessed that the virus may contribute towards the reduction in the demand for smartphones significantly in the first quarter in China, the world’s biggest market for gadgets.

The car industry is yet another sector that has been influenced by disturbance to its supply chain.

A week ago, the heavy equipment manufacturer JCB said it was cutting production in the UK because of a shortage of components from China.

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives wrote in a note to customers, “While we have discussed a negative iPhone impact from the coronavirus over the past few weeks, the magnitude of this impact to miss its revenue guidance midway through February is clearly worse than feared,”

New virus cases outside the ‘epicenter area’ has been declining throughout the previous 13 days. There were 115 new cases outside Hubei reported on Monday, sharply down from about 450 a week back. In any case, regardless of expectations that factories and shops are slowly easing back to normal, Apple’s warning, however, will underline that China’s economy will be greatly influenced by the coronavirus.
