App Recap: Voice Dream Reader, SmartGym, BIAS FX 2, and Major App Updates

In this week’s App Recap, we’ve highlighted three apps that are worth checking out. We’ve also compiled a list of apps that received major updates this week.

Apps to Check Out

  • Voice Dream Reader (iOS, $9.99) – Voice Dream reader, a text-to-speech app featured in the Today section of the App Store, has been one of the most popular accessibility apps since its launch eight years ago. The app supports the reading of PDF files, Web articles, plain text files, and more. Upon purchasing the app, users are welcomed with both 36 built in iOS voices in 27 languages and one premium Acapela voice, and over 200 other premium voices are available through in-app purchases. Voice Dream Reader also features several tools such as bookmarking, text highlighting, and annotations. There are several different reading styles that can also be customized to the likings of the user such as contrast, font size, auto-scrolling, and more. Outside of the accessibility space, the app’s reading style can also be set to one of several unique settings.
  • SmartGym: Gym & Home Workouts (iOS, Free) – SmartGym, a popular fitness app, is being updated soon with several new features. The app lets users create and manage workout routines, view over 250 pre-installed exercises, view many pre-made workouts tailored to the interests of the user, and more. In addition, the standalone Apple Watch app can be used for tracking the health data of the user. It’s worth noting that the free version of the app only provides access to two routines, 10 histories, and two measures. To access unlimited routines, measurements, and histories, users have the option to subscribe to monthly or yearly plans, which start at $4.99 and $29.99 respectively. The app’s update will feature a new Smart Trainer feature which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to create personalized workouts for the user, plus additional exercises, a new design, and more.
  • BIAS FX 2 (iOS, Free) – BIAS FX 2, the successor to the popular Guitar Amp and Effects app BIAS FX, was recently released with an updated library of amps and effects. The updated library features new versions of pedals, HD studio rack effects, and effect modelers, which gives users a multitude of options when creating their own unique sound. In addition, the Looper feature was introduced as part of the update, which is a songwriting tool that allows users to practice and record directly from an iOS device. The app is free to download, but additional effects require in-app purchases.

App Updates

  • Copilot (iOS) – Subscription based finance and budgeting app Copilot this week announced support for importing Apple Card data directly into its app. Apple Card users are now able to take advantage of Copilot’s budgeting and transaction monitoring tools without having to copy over the data manually into the app.
  • Google – Google this week updated its Google Search app with Dark Mode support. It is also worth noting that users still running iOS 12 can utilize the feature by enabling the setting within the app.
  • Photoshop (iPad) – Adobe this week updated its Photoshop app with two new features. Curves allows users to adjust several aspects of an image while preserving its quality. Users with an Apple Pencil will also notice new pressure sensitivity adjustments that allows for more precision when using brush-based tools.
  • Twitter – Twitter this week announced that it has starting testing new settings that allow users to control who can reply to a tweet. Users can select everyone, people you follow, and only people you mention as options for who can reply to a specific tweet. The feature is currently being tested within a small number of users globally, and Twitter plans to roll the feature out to all users should testing prove successful.

iOS Bug Preventing Some Apps From Opening With ‘This App is No Longer Shared’ Message

An app bug is causing some iOS users to be unable to open their apps, with affected iPhone and iPad users seeing the message “This app is no longer shared with you” when attempting to access an app.

There are multiple complaints about the issue on the MacRumors forums and on Twitter from users who are running into problems. A MacRumors reader describes the issue:

Is anyone else experiencing widespread app crashes? I am suddenly being informed that “this app is no longer shared with you” from several iOS apps. When I follow the prompt to the app’s App Store page, the only option is to “open” which then just puts me back into the same loop.

Dozens of Twitter complaints suggest the issue is affecting people running both iOS 13.4.1 and iOS 13.5, and it’s not clear what’s causing the problem as not everyone appears to be affected. Some users have had the problem occur after updating apps in the last day.

There have been complaints about many apps including YouTube, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, LastPass, and more. We updated the WhatsApp app an ‌iPhone‌ on iOS 13.5 prior to writing this article and immediately got the error message.

People impacted by the issue have been able to fix their apps by deleting the app that’s not working and reinstalling it. Offloading the app rather than deleting it may also work to fix the problem.

Samsung’s New Outdoor ‘Terrace’ Smart TV Supports Apple TV App and AirPlay 2

Samsung today announced the launch of a new “Terrace” 4K TV, which is designed to be used outdoors. The Terrace features an IP55 water and dust resistance rating, so it’s able to hold up to light water exposure.

Like most newly released Samsung TVs, the Terrace TV includes support for the Apple TV app, which allows users to access ‌Apple TV‌ content like iTunes movies and TV shows, and ‌Apple TV‌+. It also supports AirPlay 2, allowing it to interface with other ‌AirPlay‌ 2 devices, and Apple Music is available.

The Terrace offers a brightness level of 2,000 nits, so it works even when it’s bright and sunny outside. Samsung says the TV is ideal for sports fans with a 4K resolution and a high motion rate of MR240. There’s an optional Terrace Soundbar that offers dynamic sound, and it supports Bixby, Alexa, and soon, it will work with Google Assistant.

Pricing on the Terrace TV starts at $5,000 for the 65-inch model, with a 75-inch option available for $6,500. There’s also supposed to be a 55-inch model, but it is not yet available for purchase. Pre-orders can be made on Samsung’s website.

Finance App ‘Copilot’ Adds Support for Importing Apple Card Statements

Copilot, a subscription-based finance and budgeting app, today announced support for importing Apple Card data directly from the Wallet app.

Copilot is able to analyze ‌Apple Card‌ statements, parsing transaction data, identifying recurring subscriptions, and removing duplicate transactions. The new feature lets ‌Apple Card‌ users take advantage of Copilot’s budgeting, subscription tracking, and transaction monitoring tools without the need to manually copy data into the app.

‌Apple Card‌ data can be imported into Copilot along with data from other financial institutions, making credit cards, checking accounts, savings accounts, and investment accounts available in one place for monitoring purposes.

Copilot founder Andres Ugarte says that ‌Apple Card‌ integration has been in the works since Apple announced it would let users export data into third-party apps.

Apple card support has been a top request from our users since we launched. This integration required extensive backend development to ensure that upon import, Copilot could seamlessly integrate ‌Apple Card‌ data with the rest of a user’s financial life. We wanted to ensure we weren’t cutting any corners, and that ‌Apple Card‌ transactions could take advantage of the same algorithmic categorization and analysis that Copilot uses for other financial institutions.

Copilot is able to parse the data from financial accounts, locating and tracking subscriptions and bills, providing notifications when users get paid, and offering an end-of-month summary that details how and where money was spent.

Copilot is a subscription based app and using it requires a $2.99 per month fee, though there is a free trial available. [Direct Link]

Apple today is marking Global Accessibility Awareness Day with several new features across its sites and services to promote inclusion and access to technology for anyone with a disability.

On the front page of Apple.com, there’s a new section today with the tagline “Works the way you do” that links to the company’s existing Accessibility page, which highlights a number of personal stories as well as features of Apple’s products targeted at accessibility.

Audio narration and subtitles are also included.

iOS 14 Leak Shows Off Apple-Branded QR Codes Found in ‘Gobi’ AR App

A leaked version of the iOS 14 update has been circulating for a few months, giving us an idea of what Apple is working on behind the scenes for the new update.

Details about iOS 14 have been trickling out, and today, Josh Constine (formerly of TechCrunch) has shared leaked Apple QR codes, details about Apple’s work on an AR app, and sounds for the upcoming Apple Tags in his Moving Product newsletter.

Apple appears to be implementing a new QR code format that uses colored cones, with the files found in the “Gobi” AR app that Apple has been working on. Constine says QR codes open up Mac Pro and Apple Watch websites, the Star Wars: Rogue One movie in iTunes, and the Starbucks Card sign-up.

The code also featured references to a Gobi comparison shopping feature that could be in the AR app, and, in line with previous rumors about a possible Starbucks partnership, there were references to Starbucks discounts at specific locations, which suggests the Gobi app could offer promotions or content experiences based on location.

A video shared by Constine also features sounds and vibrations that will be used in the Find My app to help people locate their lost devices. As described by Constine:

You’ll hear encouraging sounds when you face the right direction so the lost gadget is “Ahead” of you, when you’re “Nearby”, or come within “Arms Reach”, while discouraging tones hint that you’re headed off course.

Many other leaked features have been found in ‌iOS 14‌, such as hints of a new fitness app, new features for Messages like mentions and retractions, new Apple Pencil features, Home screen updates, ‌Find My‌ changes for AirTags, the CarKey API that will allow an iPhone to be used in lieu of a CarKey, and tons more, with full details available in our iOS 14 roundup.

HBO Now App Removed From 2nd and 3rd Generation Apple TV Models

As expected, HBO removed support for its HBO Now app on second and third-generation Apple TV models over the weekend.

Early last month, the company announced that it would be removing support for older ‌Apple TV‌ devices at the end of April, a decision it said was made “in order to provide the best streaming experience.”

Following pushback from users, a couple of days later HBO said that it would be extending the deadline to May 15, with HBO GO to remain available for “a few additional months.”

The company hoped that the extended deadline would provide people with enough time to upgrade their ‌‌Apple TV‌‌ models and otherwise prepare for the day they are removed.

Affected users are advised to try alternate ways to access content, including streaming HBO GO using another streaming device like Roku and Amazon Fire TV, using AirPlay to stream HBO GO to ‌Apple TV‌, using an HDMI cable to connect a phone, tablet, or computer to a TV, and using Chromecast to cast HBO GO from a phone, tablet, or computer to a TV.

HBO GO and HBO NOW remain functional on the newest ‌‌Apple TV‌‌ HD and ‌‌Apple TV‌‌ 4K platforms. Numerous shows and movies can also be streamed for free on HBO GO and HBO NOW, including Silicon Valley, Succession, The Wire, and more.
