Apple Confirms ‘No Longer Shared’ App Bug Has Been Fixed

On Friday, an App Store bug surfaced that caused newly updated apps to fail to open when tapped, with users receiving a message stating “This app is no longer shared with you.”

The problem affected dozens of apps that had received updates, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, TikTok, and others. There was no fix at the time except for offloading an affected app and then re-downloading it, which was a hassle to do for every impacted app.

On Sunday morning, iPhone and iPad owners began noticing dozens of pending app updates in the App Store, including for many apps that had already been updated. The updates extended back as far as 10 days and appeared to have been released to address the bug causing apps to fail to open.

Apple today confirmed to TechCrunch that the “No Longer Shared” bug has been addressed and fixed for all affected customers, but did not provide details on what the problem was.

Customers who had apps that would not open should be able to use them again after downloading the relevant updates from the ‌App Store‌. Apps can be updated by opening the ‌App Store‌, tapping on your profile picture, swiping down to refresh, and then tapping the “Update All” option.

Apple Reissuing Numerous iOS App Updates, Potentially Related to Recent ‘This App is No Longer Being Shared’ Bug

Over the past few hours, a number of MacRumors readers have reported seeing dozens or even hundreds of pending app updates showing in the App Store on their iOS devices, including for many apps that were already recently updated by the users. In many cases, the dates listed on these new app updates extend back as far as ten days.

Apple has not shared any information as to why updates for these already up-to-date apps are being reissued, but some users suspect it may be related to the recent “This app is no longer shared with you” issue that was preventing some users from launching certain apps unless they are offloaded or deleted and then reinstalled.

It’s possible there was an issue with an expired certificate or other credential related to app sharing, and Apple has had to reissue these updates to include a valid certificate on each of the affected apps in order to fix the issue.

So if you’re seeing an unusual number of app updates available in the ‌App Store‌, you’re not alone.

iOS Bug Preventing Some Apps From Opening With ‘This App is No Longer Shared’ Message

An app bug is causing some iOS users to be unable to open their apps, with affected iPhone and iPad users seeing the message “This app is no longer shared with you” when attempting to access an app.

There are multiple complaints about the issue on the MacRumors forums and on Twitter from users who are running into problems. A MacRumors reader describes the issue:

Is anyone else experiencing widespread app crashes? I am suddenly being informed that “this app is no longer shared with you” from several iOS apps. When I follow the prompt to the app’s App Store page, the only option is to “open” which then just puts me back into the same loop.

Dozens of Twitter complaints suggest the issue is affecting people running both iOS 13.4.1 and iOS 13.5, and it’s not clear what’s causing the problem as not everyone appears to be affected. Some users have had the problem occur after updating apps in the last day.

There have been complaints about many apps including YouTube, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, LastPass, and more. We updated the WhatsApp app an ‌iPhone‌ on iOS 13.5 prior to writing this article and immediately got the error message.

People impacted by the issue have been able to fix their apps by deleting the app that’s not working and reinstalling it. Offloading the app rather than deleting it may also work to fix the problem.

Ubisoft Sues Apple and Google Over Distribution of Alleged ‘Ripoff’ Game

Ubisoft Entertainment this week levied a lawsuit against Apple and Google, accusing them of selling a “ripoff” of its popular video game Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege, reports Bloomberg.

Ubisoft filed a complaint in federal court in Los Angeles, claiming that the game “Area F2,” developed by Qookka Games, is a “near carbon copy” of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege, aiming to “piggyback” off its popularity. Ubisoft said that it has notified Apple and Google that Area F2 is infringing its copyrights, but both companies have refused to remove the game from the Google Play and Apple App stores.

As one of Ubisoft’s most valuable intellectual properties, Rainbow Six: Siege is played as a competitive e-sport, has 55 million registered players worldwide, and according to Ubisoft’s copyright infringement claim, is played by more than three million users every day. Ubisoft argues that the lawsuit can’t be “seriously disputed” and that “virtually every aspect of AF2” is copied from Rainbow Six: Siege, “from the operator selection screen to the final scoring screen, and everything in between.”

Ubisoft did not elaborate on why it is suing the app store operators for enabling distribution of the game rather than developer Qookka Games itself for the initial infringement. Qookka Games, owned by Alibaba’s Ejoy, is located in China, potentially making an international copyright claim more difficult. It remains unclear whether Ubisoft plans to file a separate lawsuit against the developer, in addition to app store operators.

Area F2 has over 75,000 reviews on the Google Play Store, and more than 2,000 on Apple’s App Store, and many reviews on both platforms directly note the similarities to Ubisoft’s title. Google and Apple have not yet responded to Bloomberg‘s requests for a comment.

Apple’s Services Revenue Hits New All-Time High of $13.3 Billion in Q2 2020

Apple’s services category, which includes Tunes, the App Store, the Mac App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, AppleCare, Apple TV+, Apple News+, Apple Arcade, and more, has continued to see significant growth even amid the global health crisis, Apple announced today.

In the second fiscal quarter of 2020, Apple’s services segment brought in $13.3 billion, up from $11.5 billion in the year-ago quarter, marking 17 percent growth year over year.

Apple in 2019 introduced a number of new services, including ‌Apple News‌+, ‌Apple TV‌+, ‌Apple Arcade‌, and Apple Card, all of which have contributed to the significant growth Apple has seen over the course of the last several months. ‌Apple News‌, said Cook, has hit a new milestone of 125 million monthly active users, while ‌App Store‌ revenue saw double digit growth.

Apple in 2016 set a goal of doubling its services revenue by fiscal 2020, a goal that Apple is on target to hit this year.

Apple CFO Luca Maestri also said that Apple’s active installed base of devices hit all-time highs in all products and geographies.

Apple Celebrates Earth Day 2020 With App Store Feature

Every year on April 22 we celebrate Earth Day in support of environmental causes, and during a normal year, Apple goes all out with Earth Day-related initiatives, green leaf logos on Apple retail stores, green T-shirts for employees, Earth Day Apple Watch challenges, and more.

This year, amid the ongoing health crisis, Apple’s celebrations are muted, as with retail stores closed, there’s no opportunity for in-store celebrations. Instead, Apple is promoting Earth Day-related apps in its App Store and has shared an Earth Day-themed Apple TV+ short film.

There are several Earth Day categories in the Today section of the ‌App Store‌, highlighting a wide range of apps that are focused on the environment.

In the “Lend a Hand From Home” category, for example, Apple highlights Ecosia, an app that lets you plant trees with searches, and Poshmark, an app for buying second-hand clothes. Happy Cow, an app for finding plant-based food options is promoted, along with Green Kitchen, an app filled with vegetarian recipes.

A “Reconnect with Nature” section features apps for learning about local flora and fauna through pictures taken with the camera, while a Disney+ section highlights new Disneynature films on elephants, dolphins, and penguins.

There’s also an “Explore the Deep Blue Sea” section in the Today portion of the ‌App Store‌ that highlights Apple Arcade game “Beyond Blue, which is described as an open-world adventure where players take on the role of Mirai, a marine biologist who explores a myriad of ocean life.

Last Friday, Apple released a new Earth Day short film narrated by Meryl Streep. “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth” teaches children about the wonders of the planet.

Apple hasn’t shared any other Earth Day-themed features as of yet this year, and unfortunately, with most people social distancing and remaining indoors, Apple has opted not to do an activity challenge for ‌Apple Watch‌ owners. It’s not yet clear if there will be more Earth Day-themed features coming from Apple for the weekend.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of celebrating Earth Day around the world, and the theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action.

  • Asia-Pacific: Maldives and Myanmar.
  • Europe: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Serbia.

With global smartphone shipments falling, today’s expansion reflects Apple’s growing reliance on services as a major source of revenue alongside its hardware. In terms of revenue and profit, Apple recorded its best quarter ever at the start of this year, and CEO Tim Cook hailed the company’s “all-time record” for services.

Apple Highlights Useful Apps, Accessibility Tips and More for Autism Acceptance Day

Today is Autism Acceptance Day, and as it has done in the past, Apple is recognizing the occasion by highlighting top apps, accessibility tips, and education resources, while also sharing art created by individuals on the spectrum.

In the Today section of the App Store, Apple is offering a collection of apps that are designed to support neurodiversity and people with autism spectrum disorder.

These apps include Proloquo2Go for those who can’t speak or need help being understood, Speech Blubs language therapy app, Streaks to-do app, Calm meditation app, and more.

Apple has dozens of apps that can be accessed through the Autism Acceptance section of the App Store, organized into categories like Communication, Life Skills, Games and entertainment, and Apple Watch tools.

To assist with remote learning, Apple Education is offering support resources for teachers and parents, including one-on-one virtual coaching sessions with Apple Professional Learning Specialists. There’s also a collection of Learn and Study From Home apps that families can take advantage of, and Apple’s website has a section on customizing the iPad to make learning more accessible.

In addition to these resources, throughout the month of April, Apple will celebrate artistic talent from individuals on the spectrum, highlighting their art and sources of inspiration.

Apple is collaborating with the Art of Autism nonprofit for a “Created on iPad” online exhibit that features 15 emerging artists who identify as autistic.

Apple also plans to feature Kayla Cromer, who stars in Freeform comedy show “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.” Cromer is one of the first people on the spectrum to play the role of a character on the spectrum in a major series, and she will share films that have inspired her passion for acting.
