Apple Looking to Buy Exclusive Original Podcasts to Compete With Spotify and Promote Apple TV+

Apple is working on original podcasts that will be exclusive to the Podcasts app, and is searching for an executive to lead its podcast efforts, reports Bloomberg.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg suggested Apple was developing original podcasts focused on TV shows and movies from its Apple TV+ streaming service, using the podcasts as a way to promote ‌Apple TV‌+, but it appears Apple is also planning to purchase original content.

Apple will focus on audio spinoffs of existing movies and programs on ‌Apple TV‌+, but is also seeking to purchase original programs that could potentially be adapted into future TV+ content. Apple is said to be searching for an executive to lead its original podcasting work. The new hire will report to Ben Cave, Apple’s head of podcasting.

Apple is also said to have asked some producers working on podcasts to provide versions of their podcasts without advertisements, an effort separate from its work on original content.

Apple Music competitor Spotify has been focusing heavily on podcasts over the course of the last year, aiming to challenge Apple’s dominance in the podcasting sphere. Apple’s Podcasts app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac have long been the go-to listening choice for Apple customers.

Spotify has been working on original podcast content and has purchased several well-known podcasts. Spotify in February 2019, for example, purchased Gimlet Media, known for podcasts like “Reply All” and “Homecoming.” Just this week, Spotify scored exclusive rights to popular podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience,” which will see all of the podcasts made available exclusively through Spotify.

According to podcast producers that spoke to Bloomberg, Apple is just “dipping its toe” into original podcast content and has not yet made a massive leap into original podcast content like Spotify.

Spotify Signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ Podcast to Exclusive Multi-Year Deal

Spotify has signed a deal to pluck comedian Joe Rogan’s hugely popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience from Apple’s Podcasts library as part of a multi-year deal.

Spotify’s deal with Rogan means that video and audio of each episode will be listed on Spotify from September 1, with an agreement to make the show exclusively available to Spotify subscribers sometime later in the year.

The announcement is a clear signal that Spotify sees its push into podcasts as a long-term commitment. The Joe Rogan Experience is one of the longest-running shows and often dominates Apple’s podcast charts. Last year the show was said to have reached about 190 million downloads a month.

In addition to the podcast angle, The Joe Rogan Experience also clocks up massive view counts on YouTube, with a recent interview with Elon Musk generating more than 13 million views so far. Other high-profile interviewees have included Senator Bernie Sanders, author Sam Harris, and cosmologist Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

Spotify said in a press release that Rogan retains creative control over his show, but didn’t reveal how much it had paid to clinch the deal. In an audio message accompanying the press release, Rogan said: “It will be the exact same show. I will not be an employee of Spotify.” Spotify said it will also work with an ad agency to jointly sell ads alongside the show.

Spotify first began its efforts to enter the podcast field around three years ago, when it said it was “coming after” Apple with a strong push into podcasts. The last few years have been marked as a so-called golden age for podcasts, causing many companies to look into entering the field.

More signs of Spotify’s intention to double down on its podcasts offering were relayed last year, shortly after it acquired several podcast creation companies including Gimlet Media for $300 million.

Spotify said it planned to create new and exclusive podcasts for subscribers, and also revealed that the team that developed its Discover Weekly algorithms was working on a discovery engine for podcasts. Spotify also purchased Anchor, a company that lets users record and create their own shows that can be easily shared online.

Spotify’s Web Player Support for Safari Browser Has Been Restored

Spotify users can once again use Safari to access the streaming service’s web player, following the restoration of support for Apple’s browser this week after over two-and-a-half years of incompatibility.

A Spotify support page explaining how to use the web player includes a list of supported web browsers, which has been updated to include Apple’s browser alongside Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera.

Previously, users who visited the Spotify web player on Safari received the message, “This browser doesn’t support Spotify Web Player. Switch browsers or download Spotify for your desktop.”

Spotify confirmed the incompatibility between its Web Player and Safari in September 2017, but never fully explained the problem. One theory was that it had something to do with Google’s Widevine media optimizer plugin, which Spotify used for music streaming on the web but Apple opposed on security grounds. Whatever it was, the issue now appears to have been resolved.

Spotify Gains New ‘Group Session’ Feature With Shared Listening Queue

Spotify today introduced a new feature called Group Session, which is designed to allow two or more Premium users in the same location to share control over the music that’s bring played.

Akin to a sort of party mode, Group Session lets participants select what’s being played in real time along with contributing to a collaborative playlist.

Many people are sheltering in place right now and are stuck at home, and Spotify told TechCrunch that this feature is ideal for groups spending long hours together.

Group Session can be used after the person in charge taps the Connect menu in the bottom left corner of the Play screen, sharing the scannable QR code with additional users. Participants can each scan the host’s code with the Spotify app, and then with Spotify’s controls, they can play, pause, skip, and select tracks to add to the queue.

Spotify already offers a feature for building collaborative playlists with friends, but this new option is designed for collaboration in real-time when people are gathered together. It supports up to 100 users.

Group Session is rolling out around the world for all Spotify Premium users as of today, but it is still being made available in a beta capacity, so Spotify plans to continue refining and tweaking it based on user feedback.

Spotify’s CEO Expects Apple to Further ‘Open Up’ After EU Antitrust Complaint

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek today told Bloomberg that he expects Apple to further “open up” in long term following the antitrust complaint Spotify filed with the European Union last year.

In the complaint, Spotify said that Apple enforces App Store rules that “purposely limit choice and stifle innovation at the expense of the user experience,” and that Apple acts as “both a player and referee to deliberately disadvantage other app developers.”

Spotify specifically took issue with Apple’s 30 percent fee collected on ‌App Store‌ purchases, which has forced Spotify to charge subscribers through the ‌App Store‌ $12.99 per month for its Premium plan instead of the $9.99 per month fee it normally collects.

The European Union subsequently launched an investigation into Apple, even though Apple claimed Spotify’s complaint was “misleading rhetoric.”

Apple has since made a few changes, launching a feature that allows Siri to work with non-Apple Music services, and Spotify has also introduced new Apple Watch and Apple TV apps. Ek said these moves have been encouraging.

“We’re very encouraged about being able to now finally use ‌Siri‌ as a way of building in voice support and also being available to build products for the ‌Apple TV‌ and ‌Apple Watch‌, something that we haven’t been able to do until very recently,” Ek said in the interview. It’s unclear if Spotify was actually prevented from launching an ‌Apple TV‌ app as the platform has had other music services for multiple years as ‌App Store‌ apps.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg said that Apple is working on a new feature that will allow third-party apps like Spotify to run natively on the HomePod, and there may be an option that will allow users to change the default music app on iOS and iPadOS 14, further leveling the playing field between Apple and its competitors.

Apple, said Ek is “moving in the right direction,” but there are “many, many steps” still to go before Spotify will consider Apple an “open and fair platform.”

Spotify Now Lets Premium Users Hide Songs They Dislike Within Playlists

Spotify today rolled out a new feature that lets its Premium users hide songs that they don’t want to hear within a playlist. Spotify said this feature is rolling out to users on both the iOS and Android versions of the app (via The Verge).

With the new feature, Premium subscribers can go into any playlist on Spotify, select a song, and choose “hide song” from the context menu. Afterwards, when listening through the playlist, the hidden song will always be automatically skipped.

If you change your mind, you can un-hide songs as well. Spotify is hoping that this small update lets subscribers slightly customize its curated playlists, which can sometimes still offer tracks that they dislike.

Spotify has been rolling out a few updates over the past few weeks. Most recently it began supporting Siri voice controls on the Apple Watch, and last month it introduced a new home screen UI meant to guide users to their favorite content with more ease.

Apple Music Was Second Biggest Global Music Streaming Service in 2019

Global online music streaming subscriptions were up 32 percent year-over-year in 2019, hitting 358 million subscribers, according to new estimates shared today by Counterpoint Research.

Spotify was the market leader with a 31 percent share of total revenue and a 35 percent share of total paid subscriptions, while Apple Music earned the second place slot with a 24 percent share of total revenues in the industry and a 19 percent share of the total paid subscriptions. ‌Apple Music‌’s subscription base grew an estimated 36 percent year-over-year.

Amazon Music, YouTube Music, and Tencent Music all trailed both ‌Apple Music‌ and Spotify.

“Spotify maintained its top spot with the help of promotional activities like free Spotify Premium for three months, price cuts, customized campaigns like Spotify and a focus on exclusive content. Tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google have started focusing on music streaming and have sufficient cash at their disposal to give stiff competition to Spotify. ‌Apple Music‌ is making improvements in its app like the introduction of night mode, curated playlists to target a group, etc. Similarly, Amazon Music has been trying lossless music and is creating its own niche where it competes with Tidal.”

More than 80 percent of total streaming music revenue came from paid subscriptions, while the rest came from advertisements and partnerships with brands and telcos.

Counterpoint Research believes that online streaming music subscriptions will grow more than 25 percent year-over-year to exceed 450 million subscriptions by the end of 2020.

Apple last shared specific ‌Apple Music‌ subscriber numbers in June 2019, announcing that the service had reached 60 million paid subscribers. That number is likely quite a bit higher now, but Apple has not shared new official subscriber totals in 2020.

Spotify Kids Launches in Canada, France, and the US

Spotify has launched its standalone app for children in Canada, France, and the United States. Called Spotify Kids, the family-friendly version of the music streaming service is exclusively for Premium Family subscribers and comes tailored for children aged three and up.

The service was originally launched as a beta in Ireland last year and has since rolled out to Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Spotify says the app now has 30 percent more content than when it first launched, including 8,000 songs, 125 playlists, sing-alongs, soundtracks, and audiobooks.

Now, at a time when so many kids are home from school, we’re bringing the experience to even more people as the app rolls out in the U.S., Canada, and France — and we hope parents there will find it useful as well.

The app also touts educational content for kids, including a playlist hub called Learning which features songs that teach kids about counting, the ABC’s, science, and more.

Children can also find a new global playlist with songs to help them learn general hygiene best practices, like how to wash their hands and cough and sneeze properly into their elbows.

Spotify says it is working alongside children’s brands like Disney Music Group, KIDZ BOP, and Nickelodeon to make the app a unique experience, so expect more content soon.

The Spotify Kids app is available to download for free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. [Direct Link]
