The next-generation iPhone 12 lineup coming in fall 2020 isn’t out yet, but Fudge (@choco_bit), a leaker who sometimes shares information on upcoming Apple devices, today offered up details on what Apple has in store for the 2021 iPhone 13’s camera setup.


A simple design drawing depicts a device with a four camera array, which Fudge claims will have the following features:

  • 64-megapixel wide-angle lens with 1x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom
  • 40-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x-5x optical zoom and 15-20x digital zoom
  • 64-megapixel anamorphic lens for video capture (2.1:1)
  • 40-megapixel .25x min ultra wide-angle lens with optical reverse zoom
  • LiDAR 4.0

The leaker says that the information should be taken with a “Huuuuugggeeeee amount of ūüßā,” suggesting the source of the rumor is questionable or it’s so early that the camera setup could change. Apple makes plans for iPhones well ahead of when a new device is released, but plans change and are tweaked and there’s quite a ways to go before the ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ 13’s final design needs to be nailed down.

The rumored ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ 13 camera is wildly different from what’s in the iPhone 11, and while Apple does make major camera improvements each year, the company has thus far shied away from super high megapixel cameras in its iPhones.

The iPhone 11 Pro features a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera.

There have been some rumors indicating the ‚ÄĆiPhone 12‚ÄĆ models coming in 2020 could get a 64-megapixel wide-angle camera along with a telephoto lens that supports 3x optical zoom (up from 2x), but we’ve heard surprisingly little about the camera technology.

Despite Apple’s focus on diversifying its suppliers for various components in its products, Samsung Display is expected to still provide nearly 80 percent of the OLED displays used in this year’s “iPhone 12” lineup, according to a preview of a DigiTimes report that will be published in full tomorrow.

Samsung Display has obtained nearly 80% of the overall panel orders for Apple’s next-generation iPhone series tentatively dubbed ‚ÄĆiPhone 12‚ÄĆ slated for launch later this year, according to industry sources. LG Display and BOE are other panel suppliers for the upcoming iPhones.

Samsung was the exclusive display supplier for Apple’s first OLED ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ, the ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ X back in 2017. LG came on board the following year as a second supplier, and BOE is now reportedly entering Apple’s supply chain for the 2020 phones as Apple goes all-OLED in its flagship lineup for the first time.

Apple is widely rumored to be launching four new ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ models in the usual September or October timeframe, although supply constraints and delays in production ramp-up may lead to a somewhat staggered release as we’ve seen in recent years.

Leaker: Apple to Stick With Lightning Over USB-C for ‘iPhone 12’ Before Going Port-Less Next Year

Apple will use a Lightning port instead of USB-C in the upcoming “iPhone 12,” but it will be the last of Apple’s flagship phones to do so, with models set to combine wireless charging and a port-less Smart Connector system for data transfer and syncing from 2021.


The above claim comes from occasional Apple leaker and Twitter user “Fudge” (@choco_bit), who last month shared alleged leaked ‚ÄĆiPhone 12‚ÄĆ images showing a revised rear camera array with LiDAR scanner, a smaller front notch, and Home screen widgets.

Fudge claims that Apple has tested iPhone prototypes with USB-C ports, but that these models “won’t be making it to production.” Instead, Apple will stick with Lightning for one more year before replacing the port with a ‚ÄĆSmart Connector‚ÄĆ.


Claims of port-less future iPhones aren’t new. Apple designers are said to ultimately be aiming to remove most of the external ports and buttons on the ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ for a clean, streamlined device with less points of potential hardware failure.

Indeed, if wireless charging technology improves in the interim, Apple could potentially get rid of wired charging all together ‚Äď and rumors do indicate Apple will release an ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ without a Lightning port in 2021.


According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the highest-end ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ model coming in 2021 will offer a “completely wireless experience.” Charging would, presumably, be done all wirelessly through charging accessories, Qi-based or otherwise.

The addition of a ‚ÄĆSmart Connector‚ÄĆ, however, is a separate rumor. The use of a ‚ÄĆSmart Connector‚ÄĆ could conceivably complete the transition to a totally wireless system for ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ, with everyday charging and data transfer occurring over induction and wireless, and the ‚ÄĆSmart Connector‚ÄĆ providing a way to attach accessories and cover restore and recovery needs via special adapters.


Apple introduced the ‚ÄĆSmart Connector‚ÄĆ with the 2015 iPad Pro and updated it for the 2018 redesign. It lies flush with the bezel and has three pins providing power, data, and grounding. It’s not impermeable though, which is something that Apple would need to work on to maintain its ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ water resistance rating.

All of this could of course be irrelevant in the event that Apple surprises everyone and launches an ‚ÄĆiPhone 12‚ÄĆ this year with USB-C. Given the course of the ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ’s development up until now, that seems unlikely, but we won’t know for sure until September or October, when Apple is expected to launch its latest flagship lineup.

Three of Apple’s suppliers will share camera module orders for its forthcoming “iPhone 12” lineup, according to sources from Taiwan’s handset supply chain (via DigiTimes).


Rumors have suggested Apple will complete its transition to an all-OLED iPhone lineup in 2020 with one new 5.4-inch device, two 6.1-inch models, and one 6.7-inch handset.

Rumors suggest the 6.7-inch ‚ÄĆiPhone‚ÄĆ and one 6.1-inch model will be higher-end OLED devices with triple-lens cameras, while the 5.4 and 6.1-inch models will be lower-end iPhones with dual-lens cameras and a more affordable price tag.

LG has reportedly landed camera module orders for the two high-end 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch devices, with module shipments expected to reach 35-40 million units in 2020. Sharp and O-film are said to have grabbed orders for the two lower-end 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch phones, with camera module shipments expected to hit 50-55 million units this year.

Sharp is thought to account for 60 to 70 percent of those shipments, with the remaining 30-40 percent going to O-film. Production of the camera modules will reportedly begin in July.

Rumors suggest there will be a new TrueDepth camera system that cuts down on the size of the notch on the front. There are also rumors of a 3D triple-lens rear camera system that uses a laser to calculate depth information for objects in the room, improving both photography and AR capabilities.

If production is delayed until October, at least some of the iPhones could launch later than originally expected.

According to the latest industry estimates cited by the report, shipments of new iPhones are likely to reach 70 million in 2020, with the 6.1-inch models (both lower-end and high-end ones) to serve as the driving force, accounting for 50 percent of total shipments. The 5.4-inch model meanwhile is expected to make up 30-35 percent and the high-end 6.7-inch one 15-20 percent of shipments.

iPhone 12 Logic Board Appears to Have Leaked With Single-Layer Design

An alleged photo of an iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro logic board is circulating on social media, as noted by the Twitter account L0vetodream. It is unclear exactly which model the board corresponds with at this time or if it is legitimate.



The board does not provide us with many visual clues, but one notable aspect is that it appears to have a single-layer design as opposed to the more compact dual-layer boards seen in recent higher-end iPhone models. The board appears to have been manufactured in the 40th week of 2019, aka the first week of October.

It appears that Samsung will remain one of Apple’s suppliers of flash storage for iPhones. Earlier this month, leaker Jon Prosser claimed that the entire iPhone 12 lineup will start with 128GB of storage, up from 64GB currently.

Resolutions and Features of All-OLED iPhone 12 Lineup Detailed in New Report

Apple’s upcoming iPhones will all use flexible OLEDs sourced from either Samsung, BOE, and LG Display, with some new features like 10-bit color expected, according to a report from display analyst Ross Young.


On his site Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Young details “corrections and confirmations” on what we can expect from Apple’s upcoming 2020 iPhone lineup, which will consist of four new smartphones.

Some of these are rumors that we’ve heard before, while other information, mostly specific to displays, is new.

5.4-inch iPhone 12

Young says that the iPhone 12 will feature a flexible OLED display from Samsung Display, with Y-OCTA integrated touch. Y-OCTA is Samsung flexible display technology where the touch sensor is placed directly on the OLED panel without the need for a separate touch layer.

The 5.4-inch iPhone will feature a 2340 x 1080 resolution and 475 PPI.

6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max

The 6.1-inch “iPhone 12 Max” as Young calls it is expected to feature a flexible OLED sourced from BOE and LG Display with an add-on touch sensor and a resolution of 2532 x 1170 and 460 PPI.

6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro

The higher-end Pro version of the 6.1-inch iPhone coming in 2020 will feature a Samsung Display flexible OLED, and Young says it will be one of the first smartphones with 10-bits of color, for more vibrant, true-to-life colors and a richer variety of color gradations.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro is not expected to have Y-OCTA technology and it will feature the same resolution as the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 at 2532 x 1170 and 460 PPI.

Young says that Apple may be bringing extreme dynamic range (XDR) to its iPhone lineup, which is specified as 1,000 nits of full screen brightness and 1,600 nits of peak brightness. Samsung displays can’t hit this level, though, and thus if Apple does use XDR, XDR specifications will need to be tweaked.

Apple is rumored to be linking XDR (extreme dynamic range) compatibility to the iPhone 12 series. XDR performance on its monitors is specified by Apple as 1000 nits of full screen brightness, 1600 nits of peak brightness, 1M:1 contrast, 10-bits of color and ~100% P3 wide color gamut. To date, Samsung Display has only achieved 1342 nits of peak brightness and full screen brightness of 828 nits on smartphones, so if Apple does use XDR, the XDR specifications for brightness will need to change. Given the lower black levels in its OLED smartphones vs. its XDR monitor, contrast should actually be higher on its smartphones, in fact, DisplayMate measures the latest Samsung Display OLED contrast ratios as infinite in low ambient light.

Young also reiterates details he’s previously shared about rumors suggesting Apple will bring 120Hz ProMotion displays to the iPhone 12 lineup.

Apple’s iPhone 12 is not expected to use low-power LTPO technology, a feature Young believes is necessary for a fully functional 120Hz display given the power saving capabilities of LTPO technology.

Without LTPO, 120Hz is still possible, but it could be limited to non-native resolutions or it will be a significant power drain.

6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max

The largest iPhone 12 Pro model that Apple plans to release in 2020 will feature a 6.68-inch display with a resolution of 2778 x 1284 at 458 PPI.

Young believes this model will have Y-OCTA support, 10-bit color, and will be XDR capable. Like the iPhone 12 Pro, it could also have a 120Hz refresh rate, but again, without LTPO.

Production

According to Young, panel production on components for the new 2020 iPhones will start approximately six weeks late, which means it will begin at the end of July. Young believes that this implies a delay in the iPhone 12 launch from September to October. There have been other rumors suggesting a possible delay, and Apple did stagger the launches of the iPhone XS and XR in 2018, so we could see a similar situation this year.

Low-Power LTPO Technology Not Expected on iPhones Until 2021, Possibly Delaying ProMotion

Multiple sources have indicated that Apple is considering expanding its ProMotion technology to the iPhone, allowing for a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz for smoother motion content and greater responsiveness. The feature debuted on the iPad Pro in 2017.


The rumors began in July 2019 when a reputable Samsung leaker known as “Ice Universe” on Twitter said Apple was considering a switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate on at least one iPhone in 2020. This was followed by a DigiTimes Taiwan report in October that claimed Apple would release an iPhone with a 120Hz display this year.

More recently, both Max Weinbach and Jon Prosser have claimed that this year’s higher-end iPhone 12 Pro models will in fact support ProMotion, although Prosser said there is a possibility that Apple could disable ProMotion at the software level prior to the devices launching if it decides the feature consumes too much battery life.

On that note, display analyst Ross Young today tweeted that the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note20+ will be the only flagship smartphone in 2020 to feature low-power LTPO display technology, adding that the iPhone will follow in 2021.


Young believes LTPO is essential if Apple plans to support ProMotion on the iPhone, as it would allow for a variable refresh as low as 1Hz when the device is inactive to optimize battery life. As with the Apple Watch Series 5, the technology could also pave the way for iPhones to have an always-on display option next year.

The low temperature poly-silicon and oxide display features a reinvented pixel architecture that lets the screen refresh rate dip from 60Hz to a power-sipping 1Hz when the watch is inactive. It is worth noting that the iPad Pro supports ProMotion without LTPO, so perhaps the feature really will launch on the iPhone this year, but it sounds like there is a possibility that Apple will simply wait until 2021.

What to Expect for iPhone 12 Models Featuring a 120 Hz ProMotion Display

Multiple rumors are converging upon the possibility that at least two models in Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 lineup will feature faster 120 Hz displays.


The rumors reach back to July 2019, when Notable Samsung leaker “Ice Universe” first suggested that 2020 iPhones could feature faster displays made by Samsung and LG that would allow for a smoother on-screen experience.

Also last year, DigiTimes linked the then-nascent era of 5G with the wide adoption of higher refresh rate smartphone displays. The Taiwan industry publication based its prediction on the penetration rate of over-120Hz panels in the gaming notebook segment, which was prompting panel makers to step into the sector and develop panels with refresh rates ranging from 120 Hz to 240 Hz.

This year, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has suggested faster 120 Hz displays could be coming to two high-end ‚ÄĆiPhone 12‚ÄĆ models, and over the weekend, Twitter leaker Max Weinbach suggested that the ‚ÄĆiPhone 12‚ÄĆ Pro, which is expected to come in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, will exclusively feature a high refresh-rate 120Hz display.

An increasing number of phones launched in the last 12 months have boasted panels with faster refresh rates than the standard 60 Hz panel, which remains a holdover from traditional CRT displays that required the refresh rate to match the power supply frequency and thereby avoid potential interference.

iPhone 12 Pro may contain a 120Hz ProMotion Display, a 3x rear camera zoom, and improved Face ID, according to unreliable leaker Max Weinbach, who shared his information with YouTube channel EverythingApplePro.


Weinbach suggests that iPhone 12 Pro, rumored to come in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, will feature a high refresh-rate 120Hz ProMotion display, as currently seen on iPad Pro. The new flagship iPhone’s display is said to dynamically switch between¬†60Hz and 120Hz as required, in order¬†to preserve battery life. To accommodate the increased power-consumption of a high-refresh rate display and 5G cellular connectivity, iPhone 12 Pro may contain a larger internal battery. He specifically suggests that the largest rumored iPhone, the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, will feature a battery capacity of 4400mAh. This would be a substantial increase over the 3969mAh of Apple’s largest current smartphone, iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The rumors also expect that Face ID will feature a wider angle of view to support unlocking at a wider range of angles, alongside a smaller notch design. Weinbach reinforces rumors of a LiDAR Scanner on the rear of the device, to be used to make autofocus faster and improve the accuracy of Portrait Mode photos, as well as for augmented reality experiences. Smart HDR is speculated to be improved to reduce noise in low-light environments. The telephoto zoom lens is reportedly increasing to a 3x zoom, upgraded from the current 2x. This would allow users to take images and video closer to the subject without the reduction in quality of digital zoom.
