Apple’s iPhone 11 Was the Most Popular Smartphone in Q1 2020

Apple’s iPhone 11 was the most in-demand smartphone during the first quarter of 2020, even as the world weathered a global pandemic, according to new research shared today by research firm Omdia.

Apple shipped an estimated 19.5 million ‌iPhone 11‌ models during the quarter, thanks to the more affordable price tag of the device along with its robust feature set.

“For more than five years–even amid shifting conditions in the wireless market and the global economy–one thing has remained consistent in the smartphone business: Apple has taken either the first or second rank in Omdia’s global model shipment ranking,” said Jusy Hong, director of smartphone research at Omdia. “Apple’s success is the result of its strategy to offer relatively few models. This has allowed the company to focus its efforts on a small number of products that appeal to a broad selection of consumers and sell in extremely high volumes.”

Samsung’s Galaxy A51 was the second most popular smartphone with 6.8 million units shipped, followed by the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro, with 6.6 and 6.1 million units shipped, respectively.

Apple’s iPhone XR, which was the best-selling smartphone in the year-ago quarter, took the fourth spot with 4.7 million units shipped. The ‌iPhone XR‌ was more popular than the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, though it’s worth noting that those two smartphones were counted individually rather than together.

Apple shipped an estimated 4.2 million iPhone 11 Pro Max models and an estimated 3.8 million ‌iPhone 11 Pro‌ models, for a combined total of 8 million smartphones shipped. Had those been counted as a combined total, the two models would have placed second in the shipment rankings.

Omdia is a research firm that was established following the merger of the research division of Informa Tech and the IHS Markit technology research portfolio.

DxOMark: iPhone 11 Front-Facing Camera ‘Decent’ but Misses Top 10

DxOMark this week published the results of its in-depth review of the iPhone 11’s 12MP front-facing camera. The device delivered “decent performance” and achieved an overall score of 91 points, but failed to make the overall top 10.

‌iPhone 11‌ and iPhone 11 Pro share the same front-facing camera specifications, so the results are similar but with a number of key differences, such as focus distance. The fixed-focus lens of ‌iPhone 11‌ was found to focus slightly closer than the lens on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which resulted in subjects that are further away being out of focus. Another difference was that ‌iPhone 11‌ failed to maintain sharpness as well as ‌iPhone 11 Pro Max‌ as the subject moved further away from the camera. Otherwise, most images taken with the two devices were extremely similar.

Video on the ‌iPhone 11‌ front-facing camera was, however, found to be “slightly better” in color accuracy and noise-management than Apple’s top-end smartphone. This advantage is, however, diminished by the focus issues, which are said to pose a potential problem for “users who work with longer selfie sticks or who shoot a lot of group selfies”. The review concludes that ‌iPhone 11‌ offers a “good option for selfie video capture, but not among the best we have seen.”

The ‌iPhone 11‌’s overall DxOMark score of 91 was just one point lower than that of the ‌iPhone 11 Pro Max‌ at 92. The Huawei P40 Pro has performed best in DxOMark testing, with a score of 103. ‌iPhone 11‌’s front-facing camera is surpassed by 12 other smartphones. Overall, ‌iPhone 11‌ is praised as “a capable option for selfie shooters, with its front camera delivering nice colors and good exposure in most situations,” but “image output can be quite noisy and the fixed-focus lens, which is geared towards closer focusing distances.”

DxO is a well-known French image lab that is noted for its attempts at assigning objective scores of smartphone camera quality, although they have been subject to some criticism from those who argue that camera quality is inherently subjective and thus can’t be quantified with a score.

Chinese Retailers Slashing iPhone 11 Prices to Entice Reluctant Customers

Multiple third-party resellers in China are offering discounts on the iPhone 11 lineup this week, with savings up to an equivalent of $227 off a high-end iPhone 11 Pro Max, according to the South China Morning Post.

On JD.com, the 64GB version of the basic ‌iPhone 11‌ now costs 4,999 yuan (US$708), 500 yuan (US$70) cheaper than the original price. The more expensive iPhone 11 Pro has an even steeper price cut that shaves off 1,200 yuan (US$170). And the top-tier ‌iPhone 11 Pro Max‌ is selling for a whopping 1,600 yuan (US$227) off.

The savings are likely passed on by Apple in an attempt to bolster demand during a time when consumer confidence and spending is lower, although the company declined to comment on whether it had authorized the price cuts and ‌iPhone 11‌ prices on Apple’s Chinese website have not been reduced.

Chinese resellers offered similar discounts on iPhone XS and iPhone XR models in early 2019, shortly after Apple lowered its revenue guidance for the first quarter of its 2019 fiscal year due to fewer iPhone upgrades than it had anticipated, particularly in the Greater China region.
