U.K. Smart Home Firm Hive Rolls Out HomeKit Support for Active Line of Products

Hive, the U.K. smart connected home company backed by British Gas, has quietly added Apple HomeKit support to its range of smart home products.

First spotted by iMore, the support is part of a software update that began rolling out late last week. When the soft launch is complete, Hive’s ‌HomeKit‌ compatible accessories include all its Active Smart Plug, Heating, and Connected Lighting products.

The development comes some time after Hive said it was working on supporting ‌HomeKit‌ in its product line. The company mad the original announcement after rolling out Siri Shortcuts support in June 2019.

To get Hive products up and running with ‌HomeKit‌, owners will need the latest Hive Hub or the Hub 360, both of which can be updated to version 10.28.0 of the software via the Hive app.

After the update is installed, owners should open the menu in the Hive app and tap Install Devices, where they’ll find the ‌HomeKit‌ option with setup instructions at the bottom of the menu.

Logitech Launches New Circle View Camera With HomeKit Secure Video Support

Logitech today introduced its newest home security camera with HomeKit Secure Video support, the new Circle View. The Circle View Camera offers crisp, 1080p video capture with a 180-degree diagonal field of view.

According to Logitech, the Circle View features a wide dynamic range for more detail in sunlight or shadows. Like existing Logitech Circle cameras, the Circle View features an infrared night vision camera so it can continue to record in the dark, offering full-field visibility up to 15 feet away.

The design is similar to the Circle 2, but it is made from black aluminum with a new base design. The camera can tilt downwards when needed for privacy, and it can be placed on a shelf or mounted on a wall. Available to use indoors or out, it has a weatherproof body and a microphone and speaker for two-way communication in the Logitech Circle app.

Logitech has in the past offered cameras that are battery powered, but the Circle View is a wired option because it records continuously.

The Circle View Camera supports Apple’s ‌HomeKit‌ Secure Video, so it does not rely on Logitech’s cloud services. With ‌HomeKit‌ Secure Video, recorded footage is encrypted and stored in iCloud. Video can be viewed from the Circle View Camera in the Home app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Unlocking full functionality will require a home hub, which includes a HomePod, Apple TV, or ‌iPad‌ running the latest software from Apple.

There are no monthly fees associated with ‌HomeKit‌ Secure Video, but it does require a 200GB or 1TB ‌iCloud‌ storage plan. 200GB is needed for a single camera, while multiple cameras require the 1TB storage option. Apple prices its 200GB ‌iCloud‌ storage plan at $2.99 per month and its 1TB storage plan at $9.99 per month.

Though ‌HomeKit‌ Secure Video requires a higher-tier ‌iCloud‌ storage plan, video stored in the cloud does not count against your ‌iCloud‌ storage totals.

All video is secured with end-to-end encryption with video analysis done on device rather than in the cloud. The camera can detect the presence of a person, animal, or vehicle before video footage is saved.

The Circle View can be purchased for $159.99 from the Logitech website or from Apple’s online store starting today.

LG Begins Rolling Out 2020 NanoCell TVs With AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, Pricing Starts at $599

LG today announced pricing and availability for its 2020 NanoCell TVs with AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support in the United States.

The first 4K models are rolling out now, with pricing starting at $599 for a 55-inch model. The entire 4K lineup will be released by September, including up to an 86-inch model for $3,299. 8K models will also be rolling out in May and June, including 65-inch and 75-inch models for $3,499 and $4,999 respectively.

AirPlay 2 will enable users to stream videos, music, podcasts, and more directly from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a compatible LG smart TV, with no Apple TV necessary. And with HomeKit support, users can easily control the TV’s power, volume, source, and more using Siri or the Home app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

LG’s 2020 NanoCell TVs also include the Apple TV app, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Disney+, Netflix, LG Channels, and Movies Anywhere, complete with Dolby Vision or HDR10 video and Dolby Atmos sound where available.

Last week, in a support document, LG indicated that it would roll out AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to some of its 2018 smart TVs by October 2020. However, since our report, LG has removed all mentions of this.

LG Says AirPlay 2 and HomeKit Coming to Select 2018 TV Models Later This Year

In a support document, LG has indicated that it plans to add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to some of its 2018 smart TVs by October 2020, including LCD models with “SK” or “UK” in the name and OLED models with “B8” through “Z8” in the name.

AirPlay 2 and HomeKit will be rolled out with a software update in most countries, with exceptions being China, Iran, Sudan, Syria, and Venezuela.

LG initially said that AirPlay 2 and HomeKit would be limited to its 2019 and newer TV models since it could not “guarantee” a “seamless user experience” on older models, resulting in over 20,000 people petitioning the company to reconsider.

LG previously said that select 2018 TVs will also gain access to the Apple TV app later this year.

(Thanks, Devon!)
