Facebook Launches Messenger Kids in Dozens More Countries, Makes it Easier for Parents to Connect Kids With Friends

Facebook has announced the launch of Messenger Kids in over 70 more countries as well as several new features for parents to help their children connect with friends and family during the global health crisis.

The new features include Supervised Friending, which gives parents the option to allow their kids to accept, reject, add or remove contacts.

When a child takes a friending action, parents will be notified through Messenger and can override any new connections made by going to the Parent Dashboard, where they will also be able to see a log of recent activities.

Facebook is also letting parents approve other adults to connect their child with other children through group chats in the Messenger Kids app. Facebook likens the feature to how a teacher might “help their child navigate classroom or team friendships” in the real world.

Lastly, parents in the U.S., Canada and Latin America can now make their children’s name and photo visible to certain users.

Facebook originally launched Messenger Kids in the United States in December 2017, aimed at kids under the age of 13. The app has arrived in a handful of additional countries since then, but today’s announcement is its broadest rollout by far.

Facebook said that it developed the app with guidance from the National PTA, as well as experts in child development and online safety. Messenger Kids does not require children to create a Facebook account, but instead asks parents to download the app, authenticate it, and then create a miniature profile of their kid that is linked to the parent’s Facebook account.

Messenger Kids is available on the iOS App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Facebook Launches New ‘Kit’ App for Apple Watch to Keep in Touch With Your Closest Friends

Facebook’s experimental NPE Team today has launched a new app called “Kit” or “Keep in Touch” for connecting with close friends over Messenger on the Apple Watch.

To get started, users scan a QR code on the Apple Watch, or enter an access code at fb.com/devices. Then, users select a Messenger contact and can quickly send that person a message, voice recording, emoji, or their location with a single tap.

While the main Facebook Messenger app already supports the Apple Watch, TechCrunch notes that Kit is focused on keeping in touch with close contacts, such as a significant other, best friend, or family member. Kit is essentially a simplified version of the Messenger app on Apple Watch for keeping in touch with only a few people.

This is the second app released by Facebook’s NPE Team in the last week after “Tuned,” a messaging app designed to provide a “private space” for couples to connect. “NPE” stands for “New Product Experimentation.”

Kit is free on the App Store for Apple Watch only. It appears to be limited to Canada for now.

Facebook Messenger Launches Standalone Video and Text Chat App for macOS and Windows

Facebook today launched a standalone Messenger app for macOS and Windows platforms, allowing users to video and text chat with friends and family from their desktop computer. Along with all of the expected features, Messenger on macOS supports Dark Mode.

The Messenger app connects directly to your Facebook account, so you can chat with existing friends without needing an email or phone number. These chats will sync across the mobile and desktop versions of Messenger as well.

Facebook said that it has noticed “more than a 100% increase” in people using web browsers for audio and video calling on Facebook Messenger, leading to the launch of the new app. For those interested, it’s available on the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store from today.
