Jon Prosser Claims Apple is Working on ‘Steve Jobs Heritage Edition’ AR Glasses, Gurman Calls Rumor ‘Complete Fiction’

Apple is working on a limited-edition version of its augmented reality smart glasses that’s designed to look like the round, frameless glasses that Steve Jobs was famous for wearing, according to Jon Prosser.

Prosser, who runs YouTube show Front Page Tech and who has been sharing a flood of Apple rumors in recent weeks, mentioned the detail in Cult of Mac‘s latest Cultcast podcast.

Prosser says that the “Steve Jobs Heritage” edition version of the “Apple Glass” smart glasses that Apple is working on will be similar to the gold Apple Watch that was available when the ‌Apple Watch‌ first launched.

“They’re also working on a prototype, a Steve Jobs Heritage Edition,” Prosser said. “Similar to how we had an ‌Apple Watch‌ Edition, like that ridiculous $10,000 gold one when it first came out.” Prosser went on to call the glasses “Some like like tribute to Steve Jobs, obviously just like a pure marketing ploy at this point.”

According to Prosser, Apple’s smart glasses will come in a range of styles, with the “Heritage Edition” positioned as a limited time special version. He said he doesn’t know what material the heritage version will be made from, nor how much it will cost.

Prosser also said that he has seen a prototype version of the smart glasses (the non-limited edition model) and called them “sleek as hell,” similar to a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers or the glasses that Apple CEO Tim Cook wears.

Wayfarers from Ray-Ban

Both lenses have displays, and there are no “projector” components, with Prosser describing Apple as using in-display technology. They’re “made to look like glasses” without cameras and other tech “all over the place.” At launch, Apple glasses will be similar to the original ‌Apple Watch‌ – a product that will be simple to start out with, but will evolve over time.

Earlier this week, Prosser claimed that Apple’s smart glasses will be called as “Apple Glass,” despite the fact that Google already used the “Glass” name for Google Glass years ago. The glasses will reportedly be priced starting at $499, and will be available with prescription lenses for an additional fee.

Prosser said that Apple was planning to unveil the glasses as a “One More Thing” surprise at the iPhone event in the fall, but the announcement could be pushed back to a March 2021 event due to the global health crisis.

It’s worth noting that Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has called all of Prosser’s smart glasses leaks “complete fiction.”

Apple’s Augmented Reality Glasses Again Rumored for 2021 Launch

Apple’s rumored augmented reality glasses will launch in 2021, with “small-volume” production expected to start in the first half of the year, according to paywalled information shared by DigiTimes.

Apple to roll out AR glasses in 2021

Apple is expected to roll out its augmented reality glasses in 2021, according to sources at related suppliers, which are gearing up to kick off small-volume production for the device in the first half of the year.

The full report will not be published until tomorrow and the brief excerpt offers no further information, but it comes on the heels of an extensive report earlier this week from Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser detailing what he has heard about the glasses.

Prosser says the glasses will be called “Apple Glass” and start at $499, with prescription lenses available for an additional cost. In line with previous rumors, he says Apple Glass will rely on a paired iPhone for most of its functionality, allowing the glasses themselves to be as slim and light as possible.

According to Prosser’s sources, Apple’s original plans involved unveiling Apple Glass at the annual ‌iPhone‌ event in September or October, but restrictions on in-person gatherings could push the debut back to a March 2021 event. Either way, Apple was said to be targeting a late 2021 or early 2022 launch, which lines up with today’s report from DigiTimes.

Apple Reopening 25 US Stores and 12 in Canada This Week

Apple will reopen more than 25 stores across the U.S. and 12 stores in Canada this week, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. These include temperature checks conducted at the door, limited …

Apple Glasses Could Be Unveiled in Mid 2021 and Made Available to Order in 2022

Apple plans to introduce its widely rumored augmented reality glasses in March or June of 2021, according to leaker Jon Prosser.

Yesterday, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the Apple Glasses will launch in 2022 at the earliest, so it is possible that Apple unveils the glasses in 2021 and releases them in 2022. This would be consistent with the original Apple Watch, which was previewed in September 2014 and launched in April 2015. Apple also introduced the HomePod in June 2017 and launched the speaker in February 2018.

A lengthy gap between Apple announcing and shipping the glasses could provide developers with time to create apps and experiences for the augmented reality platform, provided that an SDK is released in advance. An early announcement can also help to prevent leaks, although Prosser claims that he will be showing off a prototype of the glasses soon.

Keep in mind that Apple is rumored to be working on two separate head-worn augmented reality products, including a bulkier headset and sleeker glasses. The headset is expected to launch prior to the glasses, so there could be some confusion between the products. In any case, it does not sound like either product is imminent, so the wait continues.

Apple Acquires Virtual Reality Company NextVR

Apple has acquired California-based virtual reality company NextVR, Apple confirmed to Bloomberg today.

New’s of Apple’s planned NEXTVR acquisition first surfaced in April, but it appears the purchase wasn’t completed until recently. Apple reportedly spent around $100 million to purchase the company.

The NextVR website has disappeared, and there is a message that says the company is “heading in a new direction.” Apple gave Bloomberg its standard acquisition statement: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

NextVR melds virtual reality with sports, music, and entertainment, providing VR experiences for watching live events on VR headsets from PlayStation, HTC, Oculus, Google, Microsoft, and other manufacturers.

Prior to its acquisition by Apple, NextVR had established partnerships with the NBA, Wimbledon, Fox Sports, the WWE and more, plus it holds more than 40 patents that could be of interest to Apple.

Apple has been working on multiple augmented, virtual, and mixed reality headsets over the course of the last several years. Just today, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple’s augmented reality Smart Glasses that are in the works could launch in 2022.

Along with the smart glasses, there have also been rumors indicating Apple is working on some kind of virtual reality headset that would feature an 8K display for each eye and that would be untethered from a smartphone or computer.

Kuo: Apple Glasses to Launch in 2022 at Earliest, New 10.8-Inch iPad and 9-Inch iPad Mini Coming in 2020/2021

Apple has long been rumored to be working on some kind of augmented reality headset, and in a new note to investors, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that he expects the Apple Glasses to launch in 2022 at the earliest.

Taiwanese site DigiTimes also recently said that Apple’s AR glasses could launch by 2022 as suppliers work to ramp up development, and The Information has also suggested a 2022 launch date. Rumors have indicated that Apple’s first AR headset will look similar to Facebook’s Oculus Quest, but with a sleeker design that uses fabrics and lightweight materials to make it comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

‌Apple Glasses‌ could feature a high-resolution display and are likely to be reliant on the iPhone for processing power to keep them slim and lightweight. The glasses are expected to run a new operating system, rOS (or reality OS), and Apple is exploring touch panels, voice activation, and head gestures as a means of control.

Kuo in the same note said that Apple is working on two new iPad models, which include a 10.8-inch ‌iPad‌ and an 8.5 to 9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini. These new iPads are expected to launch in the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021, respectively.

We predict that Apple will launch the new 10.8 inch ‌iPad‌ and 8.5–9 inch ‌iPad‌ mini models in 2H20 and 1H21, respectively. GIS will be the main touch panel supplier. The two new ‌iPad‌ models will follow iPhone SE’s product strategy, and selling points will be the affordable price tag and the adoption of fast chips. We believe that GIS will be the primary touch panel supplier for these two new affordable ‌iPad‌ models because the company is the largest medium-size touch supplier, thanks to the cost advantages of Megasite. We think that two new affordable ‌iPad‌ models will significantly contribute to GIS’s revenue because affordable models account for 60–70% of total ‌iPad‌ shipments.

Kuo said that he believes the two new ‌iPad‌ models will follow the ‌iPhone SE‌’s product strategy, which means affordable price points. At 10.8 and 8.5 to 9 inches, both iPads would be larger than the current models.

The existing low-cost ‌iPad‌ is 10.2 inches, while the current ‌iPad‌ mini is 7.9 inches. It’s not clear if Apple plans to introduce larger-sized tablets or increase the available display size through bezel reduction.

Kuo previously said that Apple was working on an ‌iPad‌ mini with a mini-LED display that could be released as soon as late 2020, but it’s not clear if the larger ‌iPad‌ mini mentioned in today’s note is the same ‌iPad‌ mini that will get a mini-LED display.

Apple Reportedly Acquiring NextVR for $100 Million

Apple is planning to acquire California-based virtual reality company NextVR in a deal said to be worth $100 million, 9to5Mac reported over the weekend.

NextVR is a company that melds virtual reality with sports, music, and entertainment, offering VR experiences for watching live events on VR headsets from PlayStation, HTC, Oculus, Google, Microsoft, and other manufacturers.

NextVR has established partnerships with the NBA, Wimbledon, Fox Sports, the WWE and more, according to the NextVR website. NextVR also has more than 40 patents, some of which are related to upscaling video streaming that may be of interest to Apple.

The Orange County, California company has been struggling in recent years, failing to secure Series C funding in 2019, leading to a 40 percent staff reduction.

Though Apple has not yet closed the acquisition or confirmed its plans to purchase NextVR, 9to5Mac says that a shell company formed this year that’s believed to be Apple is hiring most of the engineers from NextVR. Employees at NextVR have also reportedly been told that they’ll need to relocate from Southern California to Cupertino.

For the last several years, rumors have indicated that Apple is exploring multiple augmented, virtual, and mixed reality headset options, and has some kind of AR/VR headset project in the works.

A smart glasses concept

Most of the rumors have coalesced around augmented reality “smart glasses” that would work as an iPhone accessory, but there have also been rumors of work on a much more powerful VR headset that would feature an 8K display for each eye and that would be untethered from a computer or a smartphone.

Apple appears to be working on more than one AR/VR project, but it’s difficult to tell as there have undoubtedly been many prototype designs. Current rumors suggest an AR/VR headset could be released as early as 2021.
