Apple’s ‘AirPods Studio’ Headphones May Feature Head and Neck Detection and Equalizer Settings

Apple’s upcoming high-end over-ear headphones (tentatively called AirPods Studio) could have a head and neck detection feature that’s similar to the ear detection feature in the ‌AirPods‌ and AirPods Pro, according to a new report from 9to5Mac that cites people familiar with Apple’s plans.

In the ‌AirPods‌ and ‌AirPods Pro‌, ear detection is designed to stop a song when the ‌AirPods‌ or removed, pause a song when a single AirPod is removed, or play a song when the removed AirPod is put back in the ear.

‌AirPods‌ Studio will have similar sensors that will detect whether the headphones are on the head or the neck, presumably playing or pausing content when the headphones are worn on the head. When on the neck, the sensor could keep the music paused.

Another sensor will detect left and right ears for routing the audio channels, which means there will be no right or wrong side for wearing the ‌AirPods‌ Studio. Pairing the ‌AirPods‌ Studio with a Mac or iOS device will unlock custom equalizer settings with low, medium, and high frequency adjustments available.

Prior rumors have suggested Apple’s high-end over-ear headphones will feature Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode much like the current ‌AirPods Pro‌, and an April report from Bloomberg indicated the headphones will have interchangeable ear pads and headband padding allowing for customization.

Apple may also sell the headphones in multiple materials, including a premium version with leather-like fabrics and a fitness-focused model with liter, more breathable materials.

A rumor from this weekend said that Apple could price the high-end over-ear headphones at $349, and that the name could be “‌AirPods‌ Studio.”

Apple’s Over-Ear Headphones May Be Called ‘AirPods Studio’ and Cost $349

Apple’s rumored high-end over-ear headphones may be called “AirPods Studio” and retail for $349, according to Jon Prosser of YouTube channel Front Page Tech.

In keeping with the successful ‌AirPods‌ brand, the rumored “Studio” over-ear headphones would significantly diversify Apple’s ‌AirPods‌ lineup, which last added the in-ear AirPods Pro in October 2019. The supposed price of $349 would place “‌AirPods‌ Studio” as a direct competitor to high-end noise-canceling over-ear headphones from Bose and Sony.

Prosser has previously accurately leaked the April 15 launch date of the new iPhone SE and, most recently, the May 4 launch date of the refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple’s over-hear headphones to enter mass production in mid-2020, which may suggest a fall 2020 launch.

Apple’s Work on High-End Over-Ear Headphones: Everything We Know

Apple has been selling audio accessories since December 2016 when the original AirPods launched. We now have the ‌AirPods‌ 2 and the AirPods Pro, and Apple is planning to add to its lineup with new over-ear Apple-branded headphones.

Apple already sells over-ear headphones under its Beats brand, but as with the ‌AirPods‌, Apple is also working on headphones that will be Apple branded rather than Beats branded. These headphones are said to be aimed at the high-end market.

Design

The headphones will feature an all-new design, and while we don’t know a lot about it, we do know some details shared by Bloomberg.

Apple is said to be working on two versions of the high-end over-ear headphones, including a premium version with leather-like fabrics and a fitness-focused model that uses lighter, breathable materials with small perforations for better airflow.

Prototypes of the headphones have been described as having a retro-like look with over-ear cups that swivel along with a headband connected with thin metal arms.

Apple is planning to attach the ear pads and the head padding to the headphone’s frame magnetically, allowing users to swap different colors and variants in and out for customization purposes.

An icon representing the headphones was found in the code in a leaked version of iOS 14, but little detail can be gleaned from the imagery.

Rumored Features

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s over-ear headphones will feature Active Noise Cancellation, a high-end feature baked into the Beats Studio 3 headphones, Solo Pro headphones, and the ‌AirPods Pro‌.

Active Noise Cancellation is designed to cut down on ambient noise so you can focus on what you’re listening to. If it mimics ANC on the ‌AirPods Pro‌, there will be a transparency mode that will enable noise cancelling features, but with an option to continue to hear what’s going on around you.

Sound quality is expected to be better than the sound quality of the ‌AirPods‌.

Pricing

Apple could price the new headphones at around $350.

Launch Date

Current rumors indicate the headphones will launch at some point in 2020, though a specific date has not yet been nailed down. Mass production on the headphones is scheduled to begin in mid-2020, which perhaps suggests a fall 2020 launch.

There were rumors indicating that Apple initially planned to launch the headphones at some point in 2019, but that did not happen.

Bloomberg: Apple to Unveil High-End Over-Ear Wireless Headphones With Magnetically Swappable Parts Later This Year

Apple’s long-rumored over-ear wireless headphones are likely to be unveiled later this year, and a new report today from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman offers more details on what we can expect from the product.

According to the report, Apple is working on at least two versions of the headphones, including a “premium version with leather-like fabrics” and a “fitness-focused model that uses lighter, breathable materials with small perforations.”

Prototypes of the headphones have a retro look with oval-shaped ear cups that swivel and a headband connected by thin, metal arms. The arms stem from the top of the ear cups rather than the sides, the people added. They asked not to be identified discussing products that haven’t been announced.

According to Gurman’s sources, the over-ear headphones that Apple is currently developing have ear pads and headband padding that attach to the frame magnetically, allowing users to swap them in and out for customization and replacement. This design may even allow users to easily convert the headphones from comfort to fitness.

Apple is expected to use wireless-pairing and noise cancellation features in the headphones like those found in its AirPods Pro earbuds. Similarly, the new headphones will use Siri for voice control and have a limited set of integrated touch controls, according to the report.

Apple headphones have been rumored for a few years now. Since 2018, rumors have predicted launch dates for the headphones that continuously miss their mark, from launching in late 2018 to sometime in the second half of 2019. However, leaked icons for the headphones were found in a leaked iOS 14 beta last month, suggesting a release sooner rather than later.

The latest murmurs from Gurman’s sources say Apple plans to unveil the headphones later this year, and Twitter leaker John Prosser has claimed Apple is targeting a June WWDC debut, with pricing set at around $350, putting them in the range of Beats Studio3 and Bose 700 headphones.

Apple is reportedly planning to target the high-end audio market with the device, which could explain the ongoing delays in the manufacturing process as the company tries to perfect the design.

The impact of the viral pandemic could also cause problems for Apple. Gurman says China’s Goertek is one of the partners Apple has discussed for handling assembly of the headphones, but the manufacturer has yet to recover fully from the disruption.

Apple Reportedly Targeting WWDC for Over-Ear Headphones Launch, New ‘AirPods X’ Later in the Year

Rumors of Apple-branded over-ear headphones have been circulating for quite some time, while more recent rumors have mentioned an “AirPods Pro Lite” that could also be in the works, and Twitter leaker Jon Prosser’s recent foray into Apple rumors provides a bit more detail on what we might able to expect for these products.

Current Beats Studio3 Wireless and BeatsX

On the over-ear side, Prosser says that Apple is targeting a June WWDC debut with pricing set at around $350, putting them in the range of Beats Studio3 and Bose 700 headphones. Prosser says Apple’s codename for these headphones is B515, which matches up with leaked icons for these headphones found in an iOS 14 build last month.

As for the “‌AirPods Pro‌ Lite” previously rumored by DigiTimes, Prosser says they are likely what he has heard are referred to as “AirPods X,” which should launch in the September–October timeframe. He says these would be similar to the current BeatsX earphones, which are targeted at the sports market. He doesn’t specifically say, however, whether the ‌AirPods‌ X would have a wire between the earbuds as BeatsX do. He also says the ‌AirPods‌ X, which carry a codename of B517, will be priced at around $200, which is double the price of BeatsX.

Generally speaking, Prosser believes that Apple’s ultimate goal is to eventually phase out the Beats brand, as both of these new Apple headphones are similar to existing Beats products. That will take time, however, as Beats offers a fairly extensive line of headphone options, including the fairly new Beats Solo Pro and the Powerbeats lineup that has seen several recent updates.
